Chapter 5 Song: Here with me - d4vd

Newt directed me towards the Bloodhouse where I would be trying out for my first job, Slicers. It was a hot day outside in the Glade and the sun was burning into my skin. I honestly was not looking forward to this job at all. I don't mind eating them, but murdering animals disgusted me. I wasn't a person who liked blood at all so I instantly knew this job wouldn't be a good fit for me. Not to mention, I'm a clumsy person and fiddling around with various sharp weapons did not sound like the best option for me.

"Hey again y/n!" Winston greeted sweetly while holding out his hand. Sweat bedding around his head and multiple dirt splotches covered his face and clothes. He had a small bloodstain on his shirt. Gross. I shook his blistered hand back, "Hi Winston," I replied. I was pretty nervous for this job. "Before we start your tryout," Winston began, "Let me grab you some tools. I'll be right back!" He jogged into a different area to go and get some axes and what not. I began biting and picking at my nails which was a habit I picked up I did when I was nervous.

"You nervous?" Newt asked from behind me. I almost forgot he was still there. I turned to face him, "I just know this job isn't the best fit, I'm definitely not going to enjoy all the blood." I shrug. Newt nodded in reply, "Alright, but don't worry there are plenty other jobs for you to try. I'll see you later for lunch, okay?" I smile, "Good that!" I say while jokingly saluting. We both laugh and I watch as Newt walks away, probably to start his Track-hoe job.

"Okay y/n," Winston said from behind, snapping me out of my daze. I turned around as he continued, "I have some knives here. I'll show you around first, then explain how to properly butcher, and finally you can start to actually slaughter." Oh boy. I carefully listened to Winston not wanting to cut my hands off while tie my hair back for the upcoming hard morning.

Flash Forward to Later...

My tryouts at the Bloodhouse, couldn't have been worse. I successfully was able to cut myself a few times (nothing severe though). I tried to process everything Winston told me, but it was a lot to remember. I learned I wasn't the best with sharp tools today. When I did manage to finally cut some cattle, I attempted to restrain myself from vomiting. However, when I saw how much blood was all over me, I couldn't contain myself anymore. I stood to the side bent over, and threw up in a patch of grass.

I felt bad for Winston because I did so horrible, but being a Slicer just wasn't what I am best at. He kept giving me reassuring looks, even though we both knew this was not a fit. When I puked, Winston excused me from try outs and said I didn't have to work any longer. He took me to the Medjack's hut apologizing. I just told him the job definitely wasn't for me and we laughed about the situation. All good. Clint put bandages on my arms from the cuts and gave me a pill so I wouldn't feel as sick for the rest of the day. By the time he was done fixing me up, it was time for lunch.

I made my way to the homestead and hopped in line right behind Minho. He noticed my bandages and decided it was the perfect time to crack a joke, "Looks like you sliced yourself better than you sliced the animals y/n." I playfully rolled my eyes, "Thanks Minho. Let's just say I'm never going to be a slicer. Wait, why aren't you in the maze today?" He chuckled and pointed to his foot, "Busted ankle. I just have to help around the Gardens today." He had some bandages wrapped around his ankle. "Jeez, get better shank. I don't want to be stuck around you longer than I have to." Minho was probably one of my closest friends in the Glade so far. His sarcastic attitude made life stuck in the maze, easier and more enjoyable, which everyone appreciated.

We made our way to our table with Newt and Chuck. I sat next to Newt while Minho sat newt to Chuck and across from me. "How was your tryouts with Winston?" Chuck questioned. "Well, apart from almost cutting my arms off multiple times and even vomiting all over the place from all the blood," I joked, "It was great." All four of us broke into laughter. "I'm guessing you're not going to be a Slicer anytime soon y/n?" Newt turned to me smiling. "Nope," I said while popping the p. "Don't worry," Chuck added, "you'll find a job you like pretty soon."

Later that Night...

My very long day consisted of multiple tryouts that were so exhausting. With the Medjacks, I was decently talented in the field, but blood grossed me out so it wasn't the perfect place for me. However, I wouldn't completely mind being a Medjack because Clint and Jeff were nice people to be around, even they said I was pretty good at being a medjack. On the other hand, building with Gally and the other Bricknicks was another skill I lacked. I almost hammered my own hand instead of a nail and I'm 100% not one of the stronger Gladers. Gally was being relatively nice and kept trying to help me out, but I think I made him a little angry when I dropped a piece of wood on his foot. The other builders were giving me weird looks the entire time. Half were cold and intimidating stares and the others were weird and pervy flirtatious ones. Ew. I made a mental note to tell Newt I wasn't really comfortable working there. He told me earlier he gets to put a good word in at the Keepers meeting when they decide my job.

Talk of Newt, being a Track-hoe with him was surprisingly fun. I got to spend time with Newt and Zart, a humorous boy that was also one of the Gardeners. We hit it off instantly and we cracked some jokes back and forth. I noticed Newt make multiple faces when me and Zart shared a moment, but I just shrugged it off. Not only did I like the people I was around, I was very proficient at gardening. I must've picked up the hobby in my life before the maze because I completed everything easily, as if I had done it before. I almost felt one with nature (as cringey as it sounds).

I hoped I would become a Track-hoe because I was a master at it and I would also get to spend more time with Newt.

After working, I ate dinner with my regular group and told them about my day. I made sure not to leave out how I crushed Gally's foot and he was basically fuming. Afterwards, Newt insisted on walking me back to his hut. At this point it was night time and felt myself getting eaten alive by mosquito's.

"Do you think you would wanna be a track-hoe with me?" Newt asked innocently. I chuckled, "Of course, can you make sure to say it's my number one choice. Wait also say I don't want to be a brick-nick because they are all scary. Oh also I don't want to be a Slicer. And don't forget to mention I don't want to be a Slopper becau-" "Okay okay, I get it you only want to be a track-hoe." Newt cut me off before I continued rambling. "Basically," I nodded. "I don't know, I think you only want to be a gardener just so you could spend more time with meee!" Newt joked, pointing his thumb towards his chest while he faced me as we continued walking. I blushed because honestly it was partially true. It was one of the main reasons why I wanted to be one. Was it that obvious? "Oh in your dreams nerd!" I responded shoving him lightly. "Whatever you sayyy," He cheekily added.

After some more short discussions about eachother's day, we made it to Newt's hut and said our goodbyes. Tomorrow is the day they discuss your job y/n. I just hope I am a track-hoe.
