Chapter 6 song - Island in the Sun - Weezer
Newt POV:
During the meeting a requested Y/N to be a track-hoe. A lot of the other keepers seemed to agree with me. Which was more than fine.
It's only been a few days but, I have gained quite a liking to y/n. Her sensible humor, kind personality, all around intelligence. I'm not sure she's just...great. It would be good for her to be a track-hoe. I could never send her off to be a runner, it's way to dangerous. I would know.
Y/n POV:
When newt told me the news of being a track-joe i was relieved. "Yes!" I exclaimed, "so happy i don't have to clean the toilets forever." We both laughed. "I guess you won't mind being bloody stuck with me all the time y/n." Newt winked. "Alright Newt." I rolled my eyes, despite it being the truth.
We both headed towards the gardens and started working. Newt showed me how to properly plant the seeds of all different crops that Fry used to create our meals. It was a bit of a lackadaisical day; however, I didn't mind because it was entertaining talking to Newt about random things.
Later on, I was embarrassingly struggling trying to yank a weed out of the soil. Newt clearly saw my struggling and decided to help me. "Y/n are you serious..." he said moving closer to wear I was and crouching down. "You try," I breathed, attempting to pull the stupid weed, "It's like someone super glued it to the ground." Newt wrapped his arms around me and grabbed the outside of my hands trying to use both of our strengths to get it out. I slightly blushed at the touch of Newt's calloused and strong fingers on wrapped around mine. "Bloody hell" he said letting go. I frowned a bit when he unwrapped his hands from mine.
"Here let me try again" he said. I moved over a little while Newt was tugging on the weed. I looked at him. He was actually attractive from what I could remember. The sun hit his face is the right way. He was squinting his eyes and his cheeks were red from working and as well as being a big sunburnt. He had a some beds of sweat trickled across his forehead. His fluffy, sandy hair kept getting in his way so he kept having to wiping it away. His veins were showing through his arms and hands while he successfully yanked the weed out. Damn.
"Finally," Newt said, breaking me out of my trance. He tossed the weed and the big piece of dirt that was connecting to its roots ahead of us. I laughed. It was pretty funny how neither me or Newt could tug the weed out successfully, and it wasn't even that big.
Soon, the Gladers all started getting up from their jobs and heading to the lunchroom. It was finally lunchtime.
...
Lunch was decent. I ate it all I was hungry and exhausted. After me and Newt finished our meals, we got back to work in the fields.
Today was a hot day and I was sweating a bit, so I decided to take my first shower in the Glade. To be honest, I was a little nervous if any of the boys would try to pull anything and I guess it was obvious I was because Newt insisted he could guard the door until I was finished. I gladly accepted his offer, relieved. I trusted Newt of course, but I wasn't so sure yet about the other boys I haven't met.
Night finally rolled around. Despite all the other boys being tired, I just couldn't get myself to fall asleep. I sat atop the tree house, looking over the entire maze. There were so many questions still in my head. I looked around at the closed walls at night, the ivy hanging loosely from them. What could I have done to deserve this. My eyes wandered to the sleeping gladers all in their hammocks. Each boy lay there peacefully snoring. What could have any of us done to deserve this? My eyes fall to Chuck who was curled up in a blanket. Nothing made sense. Chuck was so young! Surely he couldn't have done something so terrible to be here. My eyes gazed Minho. I chuckled to my self at his weird sleeping positing. His whole body was spread out and his blanket was half on him, drool was hanging from his mouth while he was snoring, I could faintly hear him from here. Somehow, his hair was still in perfect condition. I also saw Alby, somehow even in his sleep he had a stern expression.
I then was searching for Newt. Where was he. Just on queue I heard a british accent whisper, "Y/n?" I looked down into the floor below me. Newt hand his hands on his hips, looking up at me, like a scolding mother yelling at her children. "Why are you awake?" He was already making his way up the ladder. His head stuck through the small opening.
"I couldn't sleep." I admitted, "I'm just...thinking." He fully climbed all the way up and sat himself next to me. Both our feet were hanging over the edge of the treehouse and we were facing the sky. It was bittersweet. The beautiful sky and the array of stars over the foreboding maze walls. I turned to face Newt, it was hard to see in the dark but i could still see his soft brown eyes already looking at me.
"I know," he began, "I still have so many questions and I've been here for a whole shucking 3 years...3 full years and I have unanswered questions till this day." He looked down at his feet. "But I've come to peace that one day," he faced me again with a reassuring smile, "we will get out of here an know." A beetle blade ran across near us on top of the tree house, examining our movements and conversation. "Those guys watching us will pay one day for this shucking sick place." We both pulled our attention to the beetle blade.
I turned back to Newt. "But I don't understand." I almost whined, "why? what could we have possibly done to deserve to be here? it's basically a death trap." "I honestly don't know," Newt said, "I think it's some sort of test, maybe we're special." Newt was looking at the sky now.
"Do you...remember anything?" I hesitated asking Newt. At this point, we were both laying on our backs now. "Well only a little, everyone does. Some more than others. I remember I had a sister. Not much about her. Not even what she looks like. I don't know where she is now. I remember my mom and dad a little too." Newt said, "It bloody sucks you know? They must be worried sick where I am right now? Who knows. I just wish I could remember." "I'm sorry." I replied. "I kind of remembering I have a twin but I wish I knew too. It's weird, we all know things but we can't put memories to them." Newt only simply nodded as we enjoyed the comfortable silence. I leaned my head on his shoulder. "Why'd they have to make the sky so pretty in such a dark place?" We both let out a small laugh. "Probably to rub it in our face" Newt added. That's the last thing I remember before I dozed off to sleep.
