Zoey had been having a pretty rough week as you can imagine. Lola was taking her spot in everything. No one wanted her to sit at there table so she had to eat her lunch in the bathroom stall where no one could see her.
She went out to the quad and found an empty bench. She looked at everyone walking by her laughing. They were laughing, they were happy. Why couldn't she be happy. It was just a nice day outside. Why couldn't she feel nice inside.
"Are you okay?" She heard someone say. She turned around to see Tristan.
Zoey quickly wiped off her tears and looks up at him," Do you want to make fun of me too? Go ahead see if I care."
"I just wanted to see if you were doing okay," Tristan replied as he sat down. He looked at her, but she didn't look back.
"Why are you being nice to me?" Zoey asked.
"No one deserves to be treated badly not even you," Tristan responded.
Zoey finally looked at him and gave him a disgusted look, "I don't need your pity."
"Can't you just accept that I'm trying to be kind?" Tristan asked with pleading eyes.
"Why would you?" Zoey asked. Her voice was getting louder.
"We used to be friends. I believe that everyone is a good person inside," Tristan answered.
"I don't regret anything," Zoey replied.
"You say that, but here you are," Tristan said with a sarcastic laugh.
" I used to be kind. You know where that got me?" Zoey asked as she paused. Tristan didn't answer her, " No where"
"Where has being mean got you?" He asked her raising his voice.
"I ruled the school. People respected me," Zoey said with a triumph smile.
" They feared you not respected you," Tristan pointed out.
"People used me for my money when I was kind," Zoey said trying to remind him of the past.
"Showing kindness to those people takes more courage than bowing down to their level," Tristan said.
"What do you want me to say Tris?" Zoey yelled at Tristan. She got up from the bench and looked at him, "I'm sorry for bullying you. I'm sorry that I made sure that you wouldn't have any friends."
Tristan got up from the bench too, "Wow, you know what?!I really thought that after all of this you'd change. "
"Being the "kind" person you want me to be only brought me betrayal from my best friend," Zoey said as she looked at the sky trying to avoid looking at Tristan. " Don't act so innocent either Tristan. I know what you said. You were with your group of nerds and you told them I was an airhead who only had money."
" Is that what this all is about? " Tristan asked surprised.
"You were supposed to be my friend Tristan! I had just lost my mom. You were supposed to be there for me," She looked at him. "Be "kind" to me in my time of mourning. "
Tristan really mad that Zoey was trying to make this all about her yelled at her, "Why don't you come down off your high horse and realize that I'm actually the only person in this school who actually cares about you. But you know, the Zoey I knew was different. top trying to be their friend Zoey! Can you not see that they're all fake? "
Zoey mumbled, "It's better to have an enemy who is honest about hating you than having a friend you secretly puts you down when they're with other people."
Tristan trying to convince her said, "It is not a big deal."
"It is Tris. I trusted you, I cared about you, I loved you-- ," Zoey quickly slapped her hand over her mouth.
"Love?" Tristan asked surprised. " What do you know about love Zoey?"
"What did you just say to me?" Zoey asked angrily.
"You don't know anything about love. You've never loved anyone else, the only person Zoey loves is Zoey," Tristan replied. He had never stood up to Zoey this way before.
Zoey walked toward him, "Who in the hell do you think you're talking to Tristan?! "
She pushed him him back.
"Look at you Zoey! You have absolutely nothing and you're threatening me?! if you knew what love was you wouldn't have treated those people the way you did," Tristan said getting closer to Zoey, "And if you loved me Zoey, then you sure as hell wouldn't have turned everyone against me."
"Well, love makes you do crazy things when you're hurt," Zoey said as she sat down.
" I hurt you once so you put me through three years of Hell," Tristan exclaimed.
"You don't know what hell is. It is knowing that you lost your mom and that you know she is never coming back. Hell is knowing that your Dad is too busy to pay any attention to you so he just gives you his credit card like he can buy his way out of his problem. I'm the problem. Even at school. you wanna tell me that I don't know what love is?" She looked around and gestured toward the people. "No, how about they don't know what love is. You keep saying that I'm not capable of loving anybody else but myself? But Tristan, when was the last time that somebody loved me?"
"Me, Me, Me that's all you," Tristan stopped himself and looked at Zoey. He could tell that she was vulnerable. He sat next to her again. This time closer. "Look Zoey, Remember that day in eighth grade, we skipped school and went back to your house? we found that tape we used to watch when we were little, uh. What was it called again?"
"Cinderella," Zoey replied.
"Yeah, Cinderella," Tristan took a deep breathe. He lifted Zoey's face so she could look at him. "Zoey, I've always wanted to be your prince charming. I used to just close my eyes and pretend it was your foot that fit the glass slipper, and that the eyes that I gazed into at the ball before the clock struck midnight were your eyes. Zoey, I wanted to ride off into the sunset with you, I want our happy ever after. Zoey, I love you."
They passionately kissed. All that anger that they had quickly melted as the kiss progressed. Once they pulled away. Zoey looked down trying not to look at him, "I love you too. "
Tristan grabbed the back of Zoey's neck and they touched foreheads and held hands. He used his other hand to reach into to his pocket, "I know. I found your necklace."
Zoey looked at him with wide, happy eyes, "You're the best!"
