Hunter

After that night of playing cards, I figured things would revert to Mason training me like a soldier. But they didn't.

Mason continued my training but limited the time. He spent more time talking to me about my interests. We would discuss books, have meals together, and do things together that a family would do.

It took a while for me to acclimate to the new arrangement. I wasn't used to having a family. But I found myself enjoying it.

Mason reassured me nothing would change our relationship. I was still family.

Then he told me to invite Gail to dinner.

My response was less than thrilled. "Why?"

"Luci and I would like to meet Gail."

I sat across from Mason in his office. "Does it matter if you meet her?"

"Hunter, we like to get to know your friends. Luci is chomping at the bit to meet your friend. Do you want to disappoint Luci?"

"That's a dirty trick, Mason."

"Remember to know your opponent when making a deal." Mason smiled while I didn't.

I blew air past my lips. "Fine. But can you tone down your protection detail?"

"I promise my men will make themselves scarce besides Lucas."

"I can deal with Lucas. At least he keeps his mouth shut."

Mason chuckled. He knew I couldn't stand the guys that worked for him except for Lucas. Even Lucas was iffy.

If I ever worked for Mason, I would change how his men operate. The majority were sloppy and lacked knowledge about Mason. I noticed it when Mason introduced me to his men.

Kyle made the mistake of underestimating me. I snapped his arm. When Mason questioned Kyle, he lied through his teeth. But Mason saw through his lie and sent him away. I never asked about Kyle's whereabouts because I didn't care.

Gail

I was sitting on the park bench reading Jane Eyre when a shadow blocked my daylight. I sighed before lifting my head to see Hunter acting like a door. "You make a better door than a window."

Hunter had his thumbs hooked in his front jeans pockets. "You're lucky I like you."

"Lucky me. Will you move so I have a light?" I pushed his leg to the side.

Hunter got the hint and moved to sit beside me. "Did anyone tell you you're bossy?"

"Only to guys who need the help. And you need a lot of it."

"I never said I didn't." Hunter shrugged.

I closed my book and looked at Hunter. "What do I owe to having a second shadow?"

"My adoptive parents invited you to dinner."

"Why?"

"They want to question your intentions with me."

I arched my brow.

"How should I know why they invited you?"

"Wouldn't you know if you're inviting me?"

"Touché. Fine. They want to meet my friend since ai have none."

"That's presumptuous of you, don't you think?"

"What is?"

"We're friends."

"Well, aren't we friends?"
