Hunter
I woke early and left Gail sleeping in the bed. I got dressed and waited. A few minutes later, someone knocked on the front door. I checked my watch and rolled my eyes before answering the door.
Mason lunged at me as I dodged him. He charged at me. I whirled on him and kicked my boot behind his knee. Mason dropped to his feet and got his bearings before standing up. We faced off before we fought in Gail's living room.
After a few rounds, we called a truce. Gail exited the bedroom dressed in pajamas, stopped, and shook her head before shuffling to the kitchen. I moved my jaw, ensuring Mason didn't break it.
Mason pulled out a handkerchief and wiped his mouth. "Training has benefited you. You managed to stay upright during our fight."
"I expected you to show up since I didn't notify you that I was home."
Mason chuckled. "I wouldn't expect anything less."
Gail came to the doorway. "Can you refrain from beating the hell out of each other until after we have coffee?"
"What fun is that?" I smirked.
Gail rolled her eyes and returned to the coffeemaker.
"Hunter, let me give you a piece of advice. Never speak to a woman until she's had her first cup of coffee. It will save you trouble."
I glanced at Mason with an arched brow.
Mason and I walked into the kitchen to grab a coffee. "I received an interesting phone call from Richard last night."
"What did Richie tell you?" I asked.
"You broke into his apartment and attacked him."
"His security sucks ass." I shrugged, pouring a cup of coffee and replacing the pot.
Gail glared at me. I rolled my eyes and handed her a cup so she would stop her moodiness. Then I poured two more cups. I might as well since Mason would want coffee.
"You can't break into people's homes. It alerts them and the cops," Mason said before sipping his coffee.
"I would have broken in if Richie understood the assignment. How hard is it to protect a feisty redhead?" I asked.
"I gave faith Richard will fill his obligation."
"You're the only one. I have no faith in Richie's abilities whatsoever. Where did you find this dick?"
Annoyance crossed Mason's face. "Richard owes me for a debt I covered."
Oh, this I got to hear. I sat at the table with Gail while Mason sat across from me.
"Richard Brandon retaliated against another MC."
"So, what's the debt?"
"I supplied men to help Richard. Blake Roman has been a thorn in my side."
"Isn't helping a motorcycle club beneath your pay grade?"
"Not when it will benefit me later." Mason's smile wasn't friendly. It was letting you know he continuously collects his debts.
"How was the training?"
"Fine. I return in a week."
"Joseph will deliver messages if you need to get one to me."
"Doubtful. But special ops is sending me to an undisclosed location for a few months. It's part of the training program."
"I'm aware." Of course, Mason would know the details. He's not one to skimp on them with his pet project.
