Ship: Jailey

Genre: Fluff and Romance (it gets so tooth rottingly sweet near the end, you have been warned)

Summary/Pull: Jake and learning what being a princess really means to him.

Extra: this is based off that one headcannon from my Jake headcannons chapter hehe

Since Jake was little, he'd always loved Disney movies.

Those sappy love stories where the princess and the prince, or even the knight in shining armor, lived happily ever after always got him teary eyed. When he was in elementary, before his parents divorced, he used to dream of being one of those princes.

But what really made a princess a princess?

Milo was about four at the time. Their father was busy drinking himself half to death and their mom was busy filing for the divorce, so Jake was in charge of Milo most of the time. It was when his brother was sitting on the floor drawing in his room when Jake first considered the question.

"What's a princess?"

Jake looked up from where he was doodling little music notes. "What do you mean?"

Milo has just grabbed a clean piece of paper and was staring at it intensely. "Why are princesses so important? Is it 'cuz they have the big dress'?" He grabbed a pink crayon and scribbled a messy triangle in the middle of the page.

"...Maybe a little?" Jake has to take a moment to think. What did all princesses have in common? "Well, princesses are pretty." He slid off his bed to sit on the floor by his brother. Jake closed his eyes and picked a random color from the box. Blue.

"Here, this is her hair." Milo nodded and scribbled some long hair for the princess. He gave her a yellow crown next.

"And she's gotta have a- a prince," Milo said, drawing a stick figure almost twice as tall as the princess. He had blond hair and a yellow crown, as well. Milo tapped the prince. "That's me."

"No way! You're not that tall, you're like..." Jake pinched his fingers together, "this big!"

"Nuh-uh!" Milo looked back at his drawing. He took minute to add a sun on the corner and a sky at the very top. As he was drawing, he said, "I'm gonna be the coolest prince and get all the princesses to love me."

"Is that what princes do?"

"Yeah!"

The custody trials were tough. In the end, though, his mom got full custody of both him and Milo. She started working more shifts to be able to pay for everything on her own, but Jake didn't mind. He was almost nine years old, and nine is practically ten, so he was a big kid now!

Every night, his mom would come home, cook dinner for him and Milo, and then go to bed. She always seemed so tired, so Jake decided that he would help her! He started asking to help with cooking dinner every night.

He wasn't allowed to use the knife or oven, yet, but Jake got to wash the vegetables and open cans!

Jake's mom was the coolest.

He remembered his eight birthday clearly. Jake had gotten these really nice sound canceling headphones from his mom. He could finally listen to music without hearing his dad yelling! His mom was always his favorite person, even when she wasn't around as much.
