Daichi and his son come home to their mother and grandmother having some friends over.
"Hiii!" Koshi yells and hugs behind his grandmother.
"Oh my goodness, I was just talking about my boy and here he is!" His grandmother gushes over the boy.
"Say hello!" She tells him to greet her friends. He does.
Koshi was about to let go of his grandma but then stays to ask her one more thing.
"O bāchan...give me the letter please." He asks sweetly.
"When is your birthday?" She asks him back.
"Tomorrow!"
"So?"
"Oh.."
"Go!"
~time skip: evening~
Daichi is seen in another part of the house, tossing around his old green, white, and orange volleyball.
His mother comes in and has to wipe her face, as she knows he loved volleyball, but it can't help but remind him and her of someone else special that he lost.
She tries and change the subject as she walks in.
"I got an offer from my friend. They have a nice girl, your age, and she's ok with taking in your son." She tells him that a girl is interested in him.
"Oh really?" He says, half paying attention, setting the ball and catching it over and over again.
"Yes but I told them no, that you weren't interested." She quickly retorts.
"Mhm?" He says, still uninterested.
"Was I correct?" She asks him.
"Yes." He mumbles.
"Was I correct!?" She asks louder.
He stops his movements and looks at her."Yes mom." He says.
"Good. What's the use of bringing a good person in his house for you!?" She cries.
He breathlessly laughs and sits next to her, putting his arm around his mother.
"Why are you doing this?" He asks his mom, still silently laughing.
"When I go out with my friends...and they all get to brag about their daughters-in law, I don't have the luxury of doing that!" She complains.
"Ah," he laughs. He knew that wasn't the real reason. "So you want me to remarry because you want someone to brag about?" He asks her.
"No son," she says, ending her joke. "We need someone else in this house, we are incomplete..." she struggles not to start crying.
"I don't think we are incomplete, we have you, Ko-chan, and me. That's perfect for me." Daichi said sympathetically.
He gets up and starts walking around.
"Mom we live once, we die once, we get married once, and we fall in love once." Daichi explains.
"Plus...Koshi has something I will never have...his moms letters."
