It was a breezy summer morning in July, and everyone was awake except for Laney Scamander, who had spent all night with her creatures in her suitcase. A knock was heard on the floor hatch of her room. An average sized man with slightly messy brown hair climbed up into the room. "Laney, there's pancakes downstairs if you'd like some. You'll have to wake up soon, Addison is coming over to stay for the week." said the man, who was in fact Laney's father, Rolf Scamander.
Laney opened her eyes. She had forgotten that Addison was coming over to stay for the week. "I'll be down in a minute." Laney said as she sat up and rubbed her tired eyes. Rolf nodded, and went back downstairs to the kitchen. The first thing she did was go inside her magical suitcase to feed her creatures breakfast. First was the Bowtruckles, then the Nifflers, then the Unislugs, then the Pygmy Puffs, and finally, the Octoplus. Then, she tidied up her workshop a bit, trying to make it look semi clean (even though Addison had seen it when it looked like a tornado came through it.)
After cleaning up everything, Laney went back up into her bedroom to make her bed and clean up her room. Books were scattered everywhere, a mug of tea from a week ago was sitting on her desk, (that she had yet to wash) and homemade charm necklaces to repel wrackspurts layed about her room. She quickly put her books on her shelf, sat her necklaces next to her collection of crystals on her desk, and pulled her blue covers over her pillow. She then opened her wardrobe and put on a long sleeved shirt with rainbow stripes and a pair of patchwork overalls and went downstairs for breakfast.
Her family was already sitting at the table, Lorcan and Lysander, who were Laney's twin brothers, were busy chatting away about what they were going to do over the summer. Rolf was reading the Daily Prophet, and Luna, Laney's mother, was reading a copy of the Quibbler while sipping her tea. Laney went over to a large stack of pancakes that was sitting beside the stove, pulled out a plate, and placed on a few pancakes. She then drizzled maple syrup on them, and joined her family at the table.
"Addison should be coming soon." Laney said as she took a look at her watch. "Jaxson is going to come over tomorrow. Hope that's alright." Lorcan said, turning to his parents. "That's alright, just make sure you clean your room." Luna said. "Maybe mum and dad will let us have him over sooner if we clean right now!" Lysander whispered to his twin brother. The twins immediately got up and rushed off to their bedroom. "Your mother didn't mean this very second! Come back and finish your breakfast." Rolf said, but by then, it was already too late. "At least they're doing something productive."
At 10:00, Addison and her mother arrived at the Scamanders' house. Addison quickly got out of the car and ran to Laney, who was standing a few feet away from the muggle vehicle. "I've missed you so much!" Addison exclaimed. "I've missed you too! It's wonderful that you're able to stay here for a while! We have loads to catch up on." Laney said cheerfully. "Come on, we can go up to my room so you can unpack. I've cleared out a drawer for you!"After Luna and Rolf greeted Addison, the two girls ran upstairs to Laney's room. "Wow, I forgot how amazing your room is. I'd kill for an enchanted ceiling in my bedroom." Addison said as she peered around Laney's bedroom. "It is pretty magnificent. Mum, dad, Lorcan and Lysander also have an enchanted ceiling in their rooms. My mum said that it's supposed to be very calming and connect us to nature more." said Laney.
Addison smiled, and began unpacking her things. "So, how was being suspended?" Laney gave a small laugh. "It wasn't terrible I suppose. I'm just thankful I didn't get expelled. It's hard to imagine never going to Hogwarts again. I did feel I had more freedom though. No teachers were on me to turn in my assignments the day that they were due. Instead, McGonagall came over just last week and picked up my work from the past five months."
"Lucky! Sort of makes me want to get suspended." Addison said. Laney gave her a look. "Only joking of course. Anyways, to change the subject, do you know what we'll be doing this week?" "I think we're going to go out and visit the muggle world. Mum and dad want to visit some of the shops and take us all out to dinner. And Lorcan and Lysander's friend Jaxson is supposed to be coming over tomorrow. Other than that, we have a pretty relaxed week, though I'm sure we'll find something exciting to get into." said Laney. "How exciting! I know tons of restaurants and shops we can go to, given I'm muggle born. We can go to a clothing store, an antique store, a bookstore, oh, and maybe even a shoe store!" exclaimed Addison.
"A shoe store? Isn't that just a store that only sells shoes?" Laney asked. "They also sell socks!" Addison said cheerfully. "How, interesting." said Laney skeptically. "Oh, I almost forgot! Later this week, my whole family is having a get together. Both sides of my family! And I'm pretty sure you're allowed to come too! I mean, I'd definitely consider you family." Addison's face lit up. "Really? You do?" she asked. Laney nodded. Addison wrapped her arms around her friend. Laney stood stiff in shock, but tried to let her body relax a little. "You are literally the best Laney!"
"Thanks, I try!" Laney said once Addison let go. "So, what do you want to do? We could go and hang around town, or we could take a walk, or we could just hang out here if you'd like." Addison thought for a moment. "Let's go explore town. You show me everything there is to see in the wizarding world, I'll show you everything there is to see in the muggle world." Addison said. Laney nodded. "Alright, I'll just have to tell mum first."
Laney and Addison climbed down out of her bedroom and headed outside. Her mum was busy talking to herself in the garden, but stopped once she saw Laney and Addison. "Mum, would it be alright if me and Addison went to town? I want to show her around." asked Laney. Luna thought for a moment. "Yes, I suppose that would be alright. Just be home before lunch please."
Laney nodded. "Thanks mum!" She rushed off to the house, and Addison followed after her. "I just need to grab my bag and a bit of money. I'll be right back!" Laney rushed off to her bedroom, grabbed her messenger bag and threw a small pouch that contained a few coins. Just before she was about to leave her room, she made a last minute decision to grab one of her Bowtruckle friends, incase of emergency. She opened her case and climbed down inside. Laney then made her way out of her workshop and into the forest. The Bowtruckles poked their heads out. "Hello everyone!" Laney greeted. "Me and Addison are going out to town, would one of you like to come along?" she asked as she put out her hand. A Bowtruckle stepped forward. It was Olium, the Bowtruckle that her friend Frank had named. "Oh hello Olium! I suppose you'd like to come with us on our adventure?" The Bowtruckle nodded its head.
Laney gently placed Olium in her bag, wished the other Bowtruckles a farewell, and climbed back up to her bedroom and latched her case shut. She pulled out a key that was in one of the many drawers in her desk, and locked the case. "Now we can go." Laney told Olium. Laney rushed out of her room and down the stairs. "Ready?" Addison asked. Laney nodded. "Fantastic! Let us go on our new found adventure!" said Addison.
