"You wanted to see me-" Olivia paused for a second as she leaned on her moms officer doorway. "Captain."The way Olivia said the word 'captain' sounded distasteful.
Captain Anderson stared at her daughter for a moment, taking in her appearance and how much she has grown since the last time she has seen her this close.
She turned out to be a beautiful young woman and Captain Anderen wanted to smile, but she kept a straight face.
"Come in, take a seat." Captain Anderson used her hand to motion her inside of her office.
"I like standing." Olivia spoke as she strutted into the office, closing the door behind her.
Captain Anderson nodded her head. "I heard that you did well for your first shift."
Olivia scoffed at her mothers words causing the older woman to raise a brow in questioning.
"What?"
"Please tell me you didn't ask Officer Smith how I did." Olivia let out annoyed.
"I have eyes and ears everywhere, Olivia." Captain Anderson spoke as she leaned on her desk with her arms crossed.
"You know how bad that makes me look? You can't be treating me like I'm your daughter. It seems like I'm getting special treatment and god knows people are already talking shit." Olivia exclaimed as she flared her hands in the air.
"I'm not giving you special treatment." Captain Anderson rolled her eyes. "It's none of your concern, but I keep tabs on all of my rookies not just you."
Olivia glared at her mother. "Why am I standing here right now?" Oliva asked wondering why she really asked for Olivia to see her after the shift.
Captain Anderen's eyes softened. "I haven't seen you since you left for college. . You didn't even let me come to your academy graduation or any graduation."
"Don't act like you don't know why I didn't invite you." Olivia growled out. "Don't call me to your office unless it actually important." Olivia turned around and walked out of her mothers office leaving the older woman to her thoughts.
As soon as Olivia walked out of the office she pulled out her phone to message John.
• • •"Hey guys." Olivia sighed out in relief as she finally made it to the bar where her fellow rookie friends have been for at least an hour. "Hopefully I didn't miss much."
"Just your first drink." John smiled to comfort his friend, knowing why she was let.
John slid over her pitcher of beer while Lucy passed the girl a large glass filled with beer already making Olivia slowly grin.
"Don't forget these." Jackson pushed over the two shots that John bought for her.
Olivia bit the inside of her lip, trying to contain her smile from getting bigger. "You guys are the best."
"To the first day." Lucy held up her beer and the group clinked their drinks together.
"You want to talk about it?" Lucy asked after they all put their drinks down which made Olivia furrow her brows in confusion; missing the conversation they must've started without her.
"No." John paused. "I felt him die. A guy I- I was just talking to. And I thought I was ready, but I don't think anything can prepare you for that."
Olivia frowned at his words, she's been so caught up in her own drama that she didn't think about what John and her other friends went through today.
"I saw my first body when I was 10. My dad took me to the morgue, pulled a drawer, and there was this kid, maybe 18. O.D.'d on oxy." Jackson told his friends after a moment of letting Johns words sink in
"That's some questionable parenting right there." Lucy made a concerning look.
"I'm sorry. Didn't your folks put you in therapy at the same age?" Jackson shot back jokingly making John crack a smile.
"They were trying to teach me coping skills." Lucy gave him a pointed look.
"Yeah, so was my dad. You know, this job is a magnifying glass. It reveals everything, especially the parts you're trying to hide."
"It's karaoke hour. First up, Jackson and Lucy." The karaoke announcer spoke through his microphone and the duo looked at each.
"Whoo, here we go." The two spoke in sync.
Jackson and Lucy grab their beers and get up on stage for karaoke as Olivia clapped her hands as she watched them get up there.
Once they started singing Olivia turned back around and looked at John.
"The first time seeing someone die is never easy." Olivia spoke up making John's eyes find their way to her face. "When my dad got sick we- I spent the time he had left doing everything by his side."
"They only time I left his side was when I had to go to school, but as soon as the bell rang I rushed back home." Olivia frowned. "I thought the more time I spent by his side I would be prepared to let him go when it was time. . ."
"But when that time came- I wasn't." Olivia took a breath in as her memory went back to that time.
John listened intently on what she was saying. He reached out and grabbed his friends hand causing her lips to twitched upward.
"It was hard at first. So fucking hard, but I eventually started focusing on the present again." Olivia looked at John. "What I'm trying to say is death isn't something to get over especially when this isn't going to be the last time something like this happens. But you can choose to focus on continuing forward and helping the next person who might need it."
John nodded his head as a thank you and before he could say anything else Jackson and Lucy came back over laughing at their performance.
"Don't worry we already know we smashed our performance!" Jackson smiled proudly making John remove his hand from Olivia's.
Lucy came up right behind him agreeing with what he just said. "It's your turn Olivia."
Olivia scoffed with a grin. "No way. You will never catch me step foot on a stage in front of people."
"Stage fright?" Jackson questioned surprisingly. "You're a cop."
"Not officially." Olivia spoke. "I'm going to head out and rest before our shift tomorrow." Olivia waved goodbye and left her friends.
