I arrived in first period to find Brooklyn smiling at me and Ethan when we walk in the door. I take my seat next to her and she leans over wiggling her eyebrows. I let out a small chuckle.

Mr. Cliff surprises us and says that all we are doing in class today is having a spelling bee. All heads whip around to look at me and I let out a small laugh. Let's just say I am not bad at spelling. The rest of class goes by fast and I end up winning.

"In what situation would you need to spell 'bourgeois'?" Brooklyn exclaims. 'Bourgeois' is the word that I spelled in order to win. I laugh at her confusion. All of the sudden, the bell rings, dismissing us.

"See you at lunch," I call after Brooklyn.

*********

Brooklyn slumps into a seat in the cafeteria, looking short of breath. "Ugh, Mrs. Simpson let us out late," she whines, but immediately changes the topic by saying, "Bry, I heard you have soccer tryouts today! I would come but I have basketball practice, after school. I'm sorry, but good luck!" she squeals.

"Thanks," I say, slightly confused.

I smile when I realize what happened. Ethan invited Brooklyn to my soccer tryouts for support. He arrives just then, water dripping from his hair. He has P.E. right before lunch, so he must have showered right before he came.

He pulls out his lunch, digging right in. I've finished the lunch that I brought, which was really just a granola bar. The cocks his head. "Where's your lunch, miss?" he asks in a professional voice. "I already ate it," I reply simply. He shakes his head, pushing half of his sandwich, and his chips towards me. He eyes me suspiciously as I pick it up, and smile at him. "Thanks," I mutter.

************

The fourth period bell rings and I head out of the room, waiting at the corner for Ethan to catch up. "Hey," he breathes. "Hi," I say, turning on my heel to head out to his car.

The ride home is enjoyable, and Ethan takes the top of the jeep. The wind blows through our hair, and it's perfect.

"Pick you up at 5:45?" he asks as he drops me off. I nod, shooting him a bright smile, and with that, he's gone.

************

I expected him to leave, he didn't. I thought he was just going to drop me off and then pick me up afterwards. But when I look back, he stayed put in the drivers side.

Every time I look up, he finds my eyes and I grin, pushing myself even harder.

At the end of the tryout the coach calls me over, "Brynna, right?" I nod my head, smiling. "You're one of the best players we've seen," he gestures over at the assistant coach. "And we would love to have you on our team," I smile, shaking his hand. "I would be delighted," I say, unable to contain my smile.

I practically float over to Ethan's car, shaking with excitement. "I was offered a spot on the team!" I exclaim. "That's so great! I knew you could do it!" he says pulling me into a hug. I'm blushing when he releases me, but all he has is this goofy grin taking up his face.

We ride back in excitement, "Seriously, I can't thank you enough," I say suddenly. "You have made this past week amazing."

"You've mentioned it a few times," he replied with a smirk, his ocean colored eyes trained on the road.

I groan. "I know, but I just can't believe that you would do that for me," I whisper, almost to myself, my cheeks flushing the tiniest bit.

"Damn it," he mutters under his breath. He makes the car come to a sudden halt, swerving over to the shoulder of the road. "Get out," he demands, a sudden intensity filling his blue eyes, making them go dark. All excitement from the tryout disappears, and a new excitement fills me.

I move like a robot, obeying his command, slightly disoriented by his sudden seriousness. My heart pounds inside of my chest, and my lungs stuttered, making my breathing go crazy.

"You know that day I knocked you into the mud puddle?" I nod, biting my bottom lip, not meeting his eyes. He reached for one of my sweaty hands, intertwining his fingers with mine, making my stomach do flips and my breathing to hitch.

"Never forgave myself," he sighed. When I finally got the confidence to look up at him, I found his eyes stained with sympathy. I didn't say anything, but I let him finish. "I locked myself down. I shut you out, not wanting to hurt you any further. After you moved, I missed you so much, and when I found out I was moving too, I decided to start over, treat you the way I've always wanted to," he took in a deep breath, tilting his head towards me, until our foreheads were touching.

Stop it stomach, now is not the time for gymnastics class. I bite my bottom lip, taking in the look on his face, his lips full. He reaches up, his warm hand cupping my cheek, and my bones feel like they are melting.

We are inches away, "I just want to say sorry," he whispers, his breath dancing around my neck, warming it. "I forgave you in kindergarten, you idiot," I say, a smile spreading across my face.

All of the sudden, time is going in slow motion. His head leans into mine, and I hold my breath, my eyes fluttering shut.

At that moment, his lips collided with mine, sending a tingling feeling from my head to my toes. My heart shattered and was healed all in the same moment. Everything I had dreamed of since kindergarten, and more was in the kiss. His lips were soft, welcoming me in.

We come up for air after a few seconds, or forever, I can't tell. Our foreheads are still touching, and I can fell his smile on my skin without looking up.

Okay I was wrong. Maybe he did like me, like me.
