Iris was lying on her bed with a bowl of raspberries when her bedroom door opened. Benjamin walked in, taking off his cap and scarf before leaning down to give her a quick peck on the lips. He moved to take off his coat as Iris sat up slightly.

"How was the trip?" she asked softly.

"Alright. Just kind of boring-mostly work," Benjamin replied as he started taking off his shoes.

"That's good," Iris said, then hesitated before adding, "So... babe, I was wondering if I could go out with the girls tonight."

She watched his back as he sat on the edge of the bed.

"No, you can't," Benjamin said simply, his shoes hitting the wooden floor with a dull thump.

Iris frowned, quickly sitting up straighter as she set the bowl on her bedside table. "But why? It's just the girls-it's not like I'm going to be with guys."

"Because a woman isn't meant to be out on the streets. She's meant to be at home with her partner," he said, leaving no room for argument.

"The streets?" Iris scoffed, standing up from the bed. "It's not like I'm out there whoring myself around, for God's sake. I just want to go out and have fun with my friends."

She walked over to stand in front of him, and he finally looked up at her.

"If you're going to be my wife, then that's not going to happen. My family is very old-fashioned-and so am I," Benjamin said, his tone harsh, his American accent more pronounced.

"Old-fashioned? We're in the twenty-first century," Iris snapped. "And I don't need you telling me what to do or what's best for me."

She turned and walked toward her closet, clearly intending to go out anyway.

Benjamin moved quickly after her, grabbing her wrist.

"I swear, Iris-if you go out, I'm not coming back."

The words hung in the air like a threat.

Iris froze at the threshold between her bedroom and closet. Slowly, she turned back to look at him.

The fear of losing someone again pressed heavily on her chest.

After a moment, her shoulders dropped slightly.

"I guess we can stay in... and watch some movies," she said quietly.
