fa·mil·iar :

"Half a papaya and a palmful of sesame oil; lately, your husband's mind has been elsewhere.

Honeyed dates, goat's milk; you want to quiet the bloating of salt.

Coconut and ghee butter; he kisses the back of your neck at the stove.

Cayenne and roasted pine nuts; you offer him the hollow of your throat.

Saffron and rosemary;
you don't ask him her name.

Vine leaves and olives; you let him lift you by the waist.

Cinnamon and tamarind; lay you down on the kitchen counter.

Almonds soaked in rose water; your husband is hungry.

Sweet mangoes and sugared lemon; he had forgotten the way you taste.

Sour dough and cumin;
but she cannot make him eat, like you."

Continuation.

Tayla entered the elevator with a small smile on her face pressing the button to the floor she was aiming for. Her birthday ended in an hour and she was already ready to call it quits but her new friend, Xavier, invited her to his room for the night and she wasn't about to pass.

The shots of liquor she took back not long ago making it's presence known throughout her body.

"Yo', hold the elevator!" A voice called out after her and just off of instinct, her arm slipped between the doors right before it closed almost regretting it when Chris entered almost shocked to see his ex-wife.

She had just rejected him just three hours ago at a club and he was still here unfortunately for her luck.

She felt like she should've known her ex husband would be in this same hotel since this used to be their favorite hotel when coming to Sin City. A roll of her eyes, Chris sighed and pressed the number to his floor, the one right above where she was going.

"I ain't know you was staying here," He spoke breaking conversation making her sigh wishing the numbers on the screen would move faster but they were only on floor four and had ten more to go.

"I love this hotel."

"I know me too...so how you ending your birthday?" He questioned and she huffed pinching the bridge of her nose.

"Chris-"

"Tay, I'm trying to be cordial as hell with you. This shit is new to me - to us. I wasn't expecting not being with you on your day. We been rocking together for far to long to get used to spending our days apart so quickly, hell we was together on my day and that was enough for me." He explained as she prayed to the man upstairs that he somehow made the elevator sky rocket to her floor.

She didn't say anything and just chuckled. It was like the lord answered her prayers as they reached her floor but she didn't exit and that was due to him stopping her.

"Spend the last hour of yo' day with me. Let's grab a burger at In n Out or go for a dance real quick. Act like shit is normal for a second and I promise I'll let you be and only hit you up for our child." He pleaded as she didn't look at him.
