•SHELBY•
"Are you really sure about this, Shelly? I don't really think it's a great idea."
I rolled my eyes at him and snuggled closer in his arms.
I brought him into the office today to let him know about Shay's engagement party tonight. I wanted to tell him myself and hoped he'd come with me, but he seemed hesitant.
The world thinks we've broken up and called off the engagement, but that's all a facade. The truth is right here, in this room, where we're together on this couch, starting a new relationship.
"Trust me, nothing bad will happen if you show up with me. I want you to meet my parents as my real boyfriend now. And honestly, people will just assume we've gotten back together if they see us, so we don't need to worry about what they say."
He put on his thinking face, the one he always wears when he's considering different scenarios in his head.
I wrapped my arms around his neck and rested my chin on his shoulder.
"Just trust me, okay? We can do this."
He looked at me, then let out a sigh, and I knew I had convinced him.
"You're a master at coming up with ideas that grab attention. It's like you're always making headlines. Can't go a day without that, can you?"
He said it playfully, but it stung a little.
He noticed my reaction and his playful smile faded. He cupped my face in his hand.
"I was just teasing, Shelby—"
"I know." I cut him off and pulled him into a kiss.
He responded by deepening the kiss, his hand moving to the back of my neck, sending a rush of heat through me.
We were in my office, all alone. The entire floor was empty except for us. Adam, probably at his desk outside the room, was most likely away on errands.
This was our private space, and we could do whatever we wanted. No one could interrupt us. Well, they could watch from outside, but who would dare to stop us?
Actually, yes, someone would.
Adam is the first idiot on top of the list. The walls were glass for a reason. If he saw something he shouldn't, he knew to turn and walk away.
But work took precedence over everything. I had taught him that. No matter what, if there was an important issue, he'd make sure to get my attention, even if I was busy.
And that's exactly what he did. He knocked once before entering, causing William and me to pull apart in surprise, the charged atmosphere dissipating.
"These need your signatures right away. Mr. Torrance's assistant is waiting in the lobby for the signed documents."
He spoke from across the room, seemingly unaware of the death stare I was giving him.
"I'm busy," I scolded a chill in my tone.
"Miss Falcon, this can't wait. Meanwhile, you seemed to have all the time in the world to... continue what you were doing with Mr. Fontane a few minutes ago. So, could you please?"
He held out the files, and I let out an exasperated sigh. William smiled beneath me as I got off him and adjusted my skirt's length before heading towards Adam.
"I could fire you for interrupting, but you've got a point."
He gave me a sheepish smile as I took the files from him.
