"FATHER! I CAST AND BLIND EVERY EVIL EYES WATCHING YOUR DAUGHTER. FATHER! PROTECT AND GUIDE HER AS SHE TRAVELS TO THAT LAND OF SOUTH AFRICA. WE SHALL NOT CRY CONCERNING YOUR DAUGHTER Adeola Adekunle.
LORD AS SHE'S GOING, FATHER GO WITH HER! THANK YOU FATHER ....FOR WE ASK THIS IN YOUR NAME, AMEN!""AMEN!!" My sister and I exclaimed.
"Thank you mummy" I said rolling my eyes after such a long prayer.
"You're welcome Oko mi (my dear). If I don't pray for you...who will?
"That's right mum."
"Sister Ade , are you going forever?" My sister asked , wiping the tears in her eyes with the back of her hand.
"What's all the tears for Fatima, you're too old for this abeg..we agreed no tears alright?" I pulled her into my chest, embracing her.
"If I pass my exam , you and mummy get to come to South Africa and we get to stay there permanently ."
" Yess! So you must read hard and pass your exam."
"Yes, sister Ade must read veryyy well, so that our life can be better!" Mother said rubbing Fatima's head.
"I've heard oo! You people should not pressure me it's my last night at home." I playfully responded.
I was to leave the following morning , but we had been doing 3 days fasting and prayer in advance , as a Nigerian kid you'd understand.
Also I've never travelled out of my home country.
Talk less ,travel on my own.I felt Anxious throughout the last three days.
The thought of having to leave my 14 year old sister Fatima and my mother drove me crazy, but ever since my dad passed, poverty became our last name.
LITERALLY!
So I had to face my fears for a better life for us."Is there anything to eat I'm hungry please." My sister said rubbing her tummy.
"YES! I MADE SISTER ADE'S FAVOURITE, VEGETABLE SOUP. LET ME GO AND BRING IT." my mother said raising herself up from the ground.
"Mummyyy!! You didn't have to." I said.
"Keep quiet abeg, it's my daughter's last night with me, I need to feed you well.
"Ah...okay oo! Let me come and help you serve".
Just as I was getting up I was startled by an aggressive knock on the door.
"Mama Ade! It's me the Landlord!"
"Shhh, be quiet just pretend like we are not home.." my mother said whispering.
"Ohhhh , so this is how you will be pretending not to be around everytime I come to knock, Mama Ade rent is due biko!(please) , you have until the end of this week. And I meant it! "
"If not because your husband was my good friend I for chase una out since." He said mumbling as he walked away.
I saw the look on my mother's face.
She looked helpless."Ma , don't worry about it... I'll settle it ...i'll- I'll get a side job the minute I land , before you know it I'll send money for rent okay? Please don't stress let's go and eat."
I managed to cheer her up .
The three of us ate together because the meal was small.
We said a prayer then went to sleep.
