"I didn't mean to. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm really sorry..." The girl murmured to herself over and over.
I reached out my hand to her. "Hey do you want to-"
"Get off of me!" She screamed hitting my hand away.Based of her height, she couldn't have been more than 11 years old. She had short and messy charcoal black hair. Her eyes were a lightless purple and she had pale skin. She wore a slightly ripped on the back, black cardigan, a white blouse and a black, pleated skirt with a red stripe lining the bottom of it. She was wearing dirty white socks but no shoes. Her pale skin was stained with tears and her eyes red from crying.
"Can you at least tell me what's wrong? I want to help you."
The girl said nothing to me, she just stood up, sighed and moved to the side. Lying behind her was a man. I suppose it was more like what used to be a man. I could barely make out his face it was so torn up.
"My name is Uzi Kaze. I'm with the Port Mafia. I would leave if I could. My special ability allows me to manipulate sharp tentacles from my back. That man you see there is because of my ability. I can't control it. I had no intention to kill this man."
I turned away before meeting back her gaze.
"That's not the best," I murmured to myself before grabbing her hand and smiling.
"Don't!" She cried pulling her hand back.
"Well though, I see how you feel. An uncontrollable ability, being afraid of hurting the person you care most about. So please, just let me help you."Once those words left my lips, I swear I saw light in her eyes once again. Just like how my eyes did when Ranpo let me join the Agency. It was then I realised I had found a girl who was just like me. And I was not just going to pass up the opportunity to help her.
"Please," I smiled.
Tears began to roll down her cheeks again as she nodded to me.When we got back to the agency, I suppose you could say I got a couple of weird looks. Mainly from my coworkers. I got her to introduce herself before asking the main question.
"So can we keep her?"
"Absolutely not! Also stop talking as if she's a pet," Kunikida chided.
"Yeah, I'm sorry Yamai but it doesn't seem like a good idea with her being dangerous and all," Yosano chimed in.It felt weird being denied by everyone I thought was my friend. I had to try and stop myself from crying because I didn't want to seem like I was trying to emotionally blackmail them.
"Ranpo? Please say you're on my side."
He looked away biting his lip and didn't say a thing.I was being told I couldn't take care of a girl who needed helping, by my best friend. I had to bite my tongue to stop myself from crying. Eventually Uzi stood up. She began to walk to the door.
"It's fine. I am to dangerous to be around anyone. I don't want to put you kind people at risk of being killed."
"Wait Uzi!" I ran to her, pulling her into a hug, "If you go back to the Mafia you'll be killed! Are you not worried?"
"Please get off of me."
"Uzi you can't go back! Your life will be put in danger!"
She smiled and looked back at me with tears in her eyes. "Thank you for showing me the light. I will never forget how good it feels."
"But I keep telling you! You'll d-"
"Don't worry Yamai. I have my own way of dealing with these things," She said as she walked out the door then she murmured something I could just about hear, "Even if it means going back to the dark."I sat on my knees with tears streaming down my face.
"I'm going to follow her."
Ranpo let out a long and exhausted sigh. "Why do you need to save her anyway? She's just another girl in the Mafia at the end of the day."
"No. She's more than that. The reason I want to help her is because-"
"I think she should be able to stay," Dazai interrupted, "We're the Armed Detective Agency, right? We help people who need it. That's just what Yamai is trying to do. So I say go and get her."I gave him a quick nod before running out the door to try catch up to Uzi. I could just about see her. She pulled a knife out from underneath her cardigan and continued to walk towards the Port Mafia building.
"Uzi wait!" I called out to her. She didn't turn around so I placed my hand on her shoulder. She quickly spun around and drove the knife into my stomach.Just for a split second, I could see a look of panic on her face before it turned back into a serious look.
"I told you I could do it myself. Why did you follow me?"
"The Agency they're going to let you stay," I managed to cough. I had my hand tightly gripping my stomach as I fell to my knees. My whole body was shaking.Uzi threw her knife to the ground and lowered herself down so our eyes met. She mouthed 'I'm sorry' to me just before she scooped me up into a hug.
"I think we should get back to the agency then..." I drifted off looking into Uzi's eyes. Up close, when they had light, were like a stary night sky.
"Yes I think that would be preferable to you bleeding out on the street."Uzi put my arm over her shoulder to keep me stead as we walked back to the Agency. Her new home.
