"You made it girl." Marie said as she greeted Wangari with a hug when she arrived. "Of course." Wangari replied with a smile. "Oh, hey Wangari. Thought you wouldn't make it this time too." Linda said as soon as she saw them. "Well, here I am." Wangari said with a smile. "Come on, let's have a drink together." Linda said and led them to the kitchen. "What do you have?" Marie asked. "I have beer, some whiskey, vodka-" "Don't you have anything non-alcoholic?" Marie asked cutting Linda off.
"Of course I do. But drinking that is lame." Linda said in a mocking tone. "Well, I'm good here." Marie said. "Oh, come on." She said exasperatedly. "What will you have Wangari?" Linda asked looking at Wangari. "I'll have water." She said. "Really? You guys are so lame." Linda said and walked out holding her drink. "I don't get why you put up with that girl. She's a pain." Marie said turning to face Wangari. "She's not that bad." Wangari defended Linda since she was her friend.
"She is. Don't you hear how rude and condenscending she is? She's infuriating. I sometimes feel like punching her in the face." Marie ranted. "She's not a bad friend. And you know violence-" "is not the answer, yeah yeah. I've heard that frequently but you've got to admit, it's faster and more effective." Marie cut Wangari off. "Actually I was gonna say that violence doesn't solve anything but okay, yours works too." Wangari laughed and Marie joined. "Same difference." Marie shrugged. "Let's go out there and mingle." Wangari said and dragged Marie back to the living room.
The party was now full swing as more people had trickled in within the last hour but Wangari thought it was calm. She had been to better parties back in highschool. "Hey." Marie nudged Wangari and pointed out Linda in the crowd. Marie saw Wangari's questioning look and pulled her closer then pointed again. Wangari looked again and saw Linda talking to Brian. From her previous position on the couch they were on, she couldn't see him but she wasn't really interested in either him or whatever they were saying. She shrugged and went back to her corner.
"Didn't you see them? That girl is flirting with your crush and you're not gonna say anything?" Marie exclaimed and was shocked to see Wangari shrugging. "Seriously?" Marie asked incredulously with a perfectly raised eyebrow. Wangari was honestly intrigued by that one. How did one actually raise an eyebrow? She had tried countless times without any success. Her mother did it to, so did her grandmother and her cousin Lily. "Are you even listening?" Marie asked with a sigh. "Huh? Oh, yeah, yes I'm listening." Wangari fumbled.
"Okay what did I just say?" Marie asked looking at Wangari, her gaze challenging. "Well, umm... Marie, actually, I gotta go get some- umm- go to the -umm bathroom!! Yes, bathroom." Wangari said quickly and rushed away from the couch. She didn't notice that she wasn't headed to the bathroom and then she heard voices. "No- you're stupid- to fall in love with you so that I could snatch you away from her. That was the plan and you somehow messed up. Ugh!! I hate her, I hate her so much. -stole him from me. I want to make her miserable. I hate her." She caught some of the conversation. "I know you do. And don't call me stupid." A guy replied. "Shhh. Walls have ears." A female voice said. "No one will hear us with the music." The guy replied.
They were quiet for a while then a smacking sound was heard. Wangari walked towards the door then paused when she heard a whimper. "You're a bad girl, aren't you?" She heard the guy grunt. "Yes." The female whimpered. Just walk away, Wangari. She told herself. There was another grunt and Wangari took that as her cue to leave. She walked back to the couch only to find her friend Craig seated beside Marie. "Oh hey Craig." She greeted him. "Hey Cecilia." He replied and stood up to hug her. "Why do you always insist on a hug everytime. You know she won't hug you, right?" Marie asked as Wangari evaded the hug.
"A guy can dream." He laughed a little looking at Wangari. His smile faltered for a second before he widened it. "Keep on dreaming, big guy." Marie said with an airy laugh. "Oh, hey. You were gone an awfully long time-" "is that Linda?" Craig cut off Marie mid sentence looking forward. "Yeah, and she's still with Brian." Marie replied. Wangari was looking at them when her gaze met William's. She held his stare until her phone buzzed in her pocket and she looked away to check it. "Craig, are you feeling the heat?" Marie asked exaggerating.
"Wueh. It just went up real fast." Craig said teasing Wangari. "That eye contact was scorching." Marie said making Wangari laugh at them. "Stop you guys. It was nothing. Just a stupid thing he mentioned once. It's nothing." Wangari said. "What did he say?" Marie asked looking curious. "Aren't you such a cat today?" Wangari mocked playfully. "Eeh? A cat?" Craig asked confused. "Yeah, like that saying. Or is it a proverb?" Wangari said and laughed but Craig still looked confused. "Seriously dude. Curiosity killed the cat." Marie said. "Ohh. I see." Craig said with a chuckle amused by their antics.
"Don't think I've forgotten. What did he say? You know I'm gonna nag you until you tell me, right?" Marie smirked. Wangari sighed in resignation and decided to just tell them. She knew Marie wasn't bluffing about nagging her. "He said he thinks of eye contact as a challenge." Wangari said. "Oooh. That's quite hot frankly." Marie said smirking at Wangari. "Chill, that's not positive at all. He likes demure girls who are submissive. I was like, seriously?" Wangari said nonchalantly.
"I don't know. I might take it as a challenge but that's definitely hot. I like me a lady who can dominate, if you know what I mean." Craig said with a smirk. "Ugh! TMI Craig, TMI." Marie said with a frown while Wangari just laughed.
