Wangari's phone pings as she's having lunch sitting on the couch and she sets her plate of food on the coffee table.
M: hey,
W: Hey
M: it was nice meeting you even though u didn't stay long.
by the way, you didn't answer my question.W: what question?
This guy infuriates me.
M: about us, our relationship.
W: I did.
M: no you didn't.
W: I said no.
M: but I think we'd be so good together.
I don't think you've had enough time to think about this and I don't want you to regret this. i can give you time to think about it?
W: hey so how much time do you think is enough time to think about this?
M: maybe a week.
This guy wouldn't know sarcasm if it slapped him in the face. Wangari thought as she set aside her phone and continued eating.
1 week later
M: so what's your answer beautiful?
W: it's still no.
M: really?
Oh piss off!
W: Yes, and I promise you it's still going to be no even in a million years.
"Is that him?" Marie asked when Wangari grimaced then scoffed after checking her phone. "Yes it's him. He refuses to get the hint." Wangari said. "He'll get it eventually." Marie shrugged. "Eventually is too long." Wangari groaned in annoyance. "Anyway, let's continue with this." Wangari said pointing to the papers they had spread out on the coffee table.
They worked on the plan and finalized all the details. "I'm glad we're done with that." Wangari said with a sigh as she gathered all the papers scattered on the table. "Yeah, same. Now comes the hard part, actually starting the business." Marie said and slumped on the couch.
"Yeah. But I believe that it won't be too hard." Wangari said. "Okay. So when are we starting?" Marie asked. "As soon as humanly possible. We just need investors and equipment." Wangari replied. "Okay, but when exactly is that." Marie asked. "Next month. Ahh, I forgot. We've got a cookout today and you're invited. 7:30p.m. I need to go grocery shopping." Wangari said as she gathered her things getting ready to leave with Marie following behind her.
Wangari stumbled through the front door carrying many grocery bags in her hands after she unlocked the door later that afternoon. "Hey. Oh, do you need any help with that?" Kinney asked and walked towards Wangari and took some bags from her. "Yeah, thanks." Wangari said.
"All these?" Kinney asked. "Yeah." Wangari said as she organized all the foodstuffs she had gotten. "I'm gonna freshen up and start." Wangari said when she finished arranging. "Do you need any help?" Kinney asked. "No. I'll be fine." Wangari replied as she went to her room.
***
"Hey, do you need help in there." Lily asked. "No,I'm done actually, I just need dessert to be ready but I'll just leave it to cool on the counter. Just a little icing and it's done." Wangari replied. "Can we decorate the cake?" Kinney asked as he popped his head in the kitchen. "Sure." Wangari replied. "Now I just need a shower and a change of clothes. All that cooking has me feeling sweaty." Wangari walked out of the kitchen heading straight to her room.
"It smells so good in here. What's for dinner tonight?" Wangari heard Craig's voice in the living room as she finished getting ready in her cozy evening outfit.
"You're here guys. Welcome to the cookout." Wangari said dramatically, spreading her arms wide, as she emerged from her room. "I wasn't expecting you here today but it's a good thing that I made food for eight." Wangari said to Craig with a smile as she hugged Marie.
"Let's have drinks as we wait for the rest, shall we?" Lily said as she came in with glasses on a tray and pitchers of fresh mango and passion juice. She set them on the coffee table, placed a coaster and a glass in front of everyone. They talked and laughed together and about 15 minutes later Will and his friend arrived.
Wangari was the first to see them from her position on the couch facing the door. She gasped quietly but Marie who was beside her heard her and turned to see what caused the gasp. She smirked and whispered. "Never say never." Wangari turned and glared at Marie who was standing up to say hi to Will and his friend.
Wangari also stood to say hi to the guest as a formality and the guy held her hand a little longer than a normal handshake. "Nice to meet you Wangari, I'm Austin." He said in a deep voice that had Wangari feeling her cheeks heat up and she was thankful for her dark complexion.
Everyone moved to the dining table and Wangari moved to help get the dishes but Kinney blocked her way. "You did all this and now it's time for you to relax. Sit and let us bring the food out." He said and looked at her pointedly.
"Okay." Wangari put her hands up in a surrender motion and walked to her seat. Kinney, Will and Lily got all the dishes. "Before we serve, let's appreciate Wangari, the creator of this masterpiece. She did a great job." Lily said as she set the last dish on the table.
"So we have chicken stew, rice and mashed potatoes. We've also got a salad and some kales. Sauté, right?" Lily asked Wangari and she nodded. "Yes,I got it right." Lily said in excitement. "We've also got dessert and drinks for later." Lily concluded and took a seat. Everyone took turns to served their food. "Let's say the grace and dig in." Wangari suggested and they did.
They talked and discussed all topics that were brought up as they ate. Wangari was however quieter than usual during that evening as she preferred to listen and observe and because there was someone new at the table. It also didn't help that he was the same guy she had been checking out in the cafe.
