Wangari settled in her room after having some dinner. This was after a very jovial afternoon with her grandmother who showed her around the farm. The cat had a litter of kittens which Wangari found to be cute little things. Her grandmother had gotten a puppy who she chose to name Tusky. There was also a duck with ducklings.

That afternoon was sure tiresome but well spent and although Wangari felt the need to lay down due to fatigue, she found that her mind couldn't shut down. She lay in her bed and an image of Dennis Saruni flashed in her mind. She found that a smile had subconsciously formed on her lips. It stayed on for a moment and then a frown formed on her lips as her mind wondered to Derek. He wanted her to be his girlfriend but she didn't like him like that. Sure he was a nice guy and all but she did like him platonically.

Derek had managed to convince her to give him a chance before she had changed her mind in the next few days. Wangari decided to end that agreement before it went too far. She decided that she wouldn't waste Derek's time when she had a very strong feeling that it would not end well, for either of them.

Wangari's mind seemed to want to torture her as it suddenly reminded her of the reason she couldn't give Derek a chance. She had been pining over a guy who did not even talk to her that often. Wangari was the one to always initiate conversations with him and his replies were always short and impersonal. She remembered how she had confessed to liking him and that had been the most nerve wrecking moment of her life. It had started and ended in the span of five minutes.

Wangari had confessed and the guy just advised her to try and move on. Well, at least he had let her down gently. That was why she had liked him in the first place. He was a nice guy with a handsome face, a sexy smirk and a rarely shown but very beautiful smile. She remembered how in the past anytime she thought of him, her heart beat a little faster.

Wangari had started crushing on him in school at a time when she could barely stand any of the other boys. She thought she was going crazy when one day she realized that the boy who sat two rows behind her was kind of cute in a boyish type of way. Wangari found that her eyes would gravitate towards wherever he was at the moment like a metal to a magnet.

Of course she had experienced the occasional attraction towards the opposite gender which is truly normal for a straight teenager. She had liked three guys in total in real life. The rest were either movie stars or people she had admired in a passing glance. Oh and how dare she forget about the silly thought she had in her third year of school that she fancied an older guy. She had woken up from that little fantasy with a start. She was shocked to say the least. How even did that happen. Wangari thought she must've been bewitched. That is something that would go with her to the grave. She had also fancied some lead dancer in a group back home but decided not to give in to the urge to introduce herself lest she embarrassed herself.

Through all these instances, one thing had stuck. Her fancy for the first guy she had been pining over in her preteens had stuck and gradually grown overtime with little pauses in between where she managed to convince herself she was over him. Sometimes, her thoughts were a distraction and she couldn't focus on anything. During such days, she did everything on autopilot and avoided tasks that involved thinking.

Wangari remembered a time when a girl in her class had asked her if she was like them since she didn't talk about any boys in her life and she just shrugged in response. To quote the girl, 'are you normal? You don't talk about any boys like we do. Is there no one you like?' What could she actually say to that? Oh, I have a massive crush on this guy who doesn't even talk to me and I can't get over it? No, not happening anytime soon, or ever.

Wangari served supper and sat down with her family to have supper. She had decided to scroll through social media aimlessly when she saw photos of him and another girl on that girl's birthday. She suddenly lost appetite and decided to just go to bed early. She spent the whole night watching movies in her room and only fell asleep at dawn.

The next night, she talked to a friend in a joking type of way. She sounded like her usual sarcastic self and it was a win-win situation. She had gotten a years' worth rant out of her and her friend had gotten the entertainment of speaking to her very sarcastic friend. She had then went on and talked to the guy and asked him about his love life. He confirmed that he had a girl he was interested in and Wangari felt that that had been the last push she needed to get over it. For once his response weren't as impersonal.

She felt down but wished him happiness

She felt down but wished him happiness. She went back again and again to read that and get it in her head that he was never going to notice her, ever. By the end of the week, the ache in her chest was almost non-existent, still there but minimal. She talked to him one last time, said bye and she finally felt at peace. She deleted his contact and finally felt like she had just concluded a really long chapter of her life.
