Kassandra got off the bus, her feet already hurting from the high heels she's not used to wearing. She quickly crossed the street and stood in line to get in. It looked like a slow night. She's been to Nightingale's before with German. As the line got shorter, she started to get nervous. What if he didn't want to see her? What if that was the reason he stopped talking to her? As she decided to turn back and go home, she felt a hand on her bare shoulder. "Haven't seen you around in a long time." She turned around and saw the friendly bouncer. "You're German's girl. Thought you had forgotten us. Go ahead, go in. Last I saw him he was in the bar." He opened the door for her and she didn't have any other option than to go in.
The lights were dim, music was loud. Just as she remembered it. It was pretty packed for a weekday. The dance floor filled with sweaty gyrating couples. She squinted her eyes trying to look for the bar between all the people inside. She spotted it. She squeezed herself between the throng of people. She got pushed and shoved. She finally reached the bar and let go of the breath she had been holding on to. She looked around the bartenders and couldn't find German. This was a mistake. She thought. Just go home.
As she decided, again, to go home, she saw someone walking inside the bar through the side door. There he was, German Rios, her best friend in the world. They haven't seen each other since that afternoon she left for college. "You are going to do great." German hugged her as Robert waited to take her to the bus station.
"What am I going to do without you?" She cried in his arms.
"Kass, you'll make new friends, and remember, I'll always be here. Just a phone call away. And we'll email each other all the time."
"Come with me." She whispered as Robert honked the horn annoyed.
"Kass, go. You'll regret it if you don't. I love you, girl." He kissed her cheek and let her go. She held his hand tight, as he pulled away. He winked as she finally let go.
Now, here she was standing in front of him one more time. He walked past her. "Hey, handsome!" She yelled as he turned around. He looked at her and a big smile came over his face. Suddenly, his expression changed to an upset expression.
"What are you doing here?" He asked furiously.
"I missed you. I came to see you." She said as he walked out of the bar and stood at her side. He grabbed her arm and pulled her away to the back of the club, he opened a door and pushed her in. He let her go as he locked the door. They could barely hear the music. All she could feel was a tension between them. He turned around and looked at her with regret. She ran to him and hugged him tight. He hesitated but eventually hugged her back. She cried in his arms. He held her tight and kissed her cheek.
"Why are you here, Kass?" He said as they finally let go of each other. He walked away from her. Avoiding her gaze.
"Aren't you happy to see me, German? We haven't seen each other in almost a year."
"I mean, yeah, it's good to see you, but you're supposed to be in school, not here. Specially here in Nightingale's. Who told you where to find me?"
"Mom did. What's going on, German?" She said placing her hand on his arm, making him look up at her.
"Kass, things have changed. I'm not the same I was a year ago."
"Tell me what happened. We promised we would always be there for each other."
"Kass, I can't. Look, it was nice to see you, but you should just go back to school and forget about me."
Tears filled her eyes. "Are you serious? You're the main reason I'm here, German."
"Why? Why me?"
"German, why are you being so cruel?"
"I told you, Kass. I've changed. Now, leave. Go back home and leave this town. Don't come back again."
"German, I dropped out of school." She said crying.
"Why would you do that?" He asked, grabbing her arms and shaking her.
"You're hurting me!" She yelled, pulling away.
"Kass, that was your way out. Your way out of this hellhole, why would you do that?" He asked pacing around the room running his fingers through his hair. She pushed him away and started walking towards the door. "Where are you going?"
"Out of here, you obviously don't want me here." She struggled with the lock.
"Kass." He grabbed her and held her tight. "It's for the best, okay? I'll always love you, okay? But I'm not a good person to be associated with right now."
"I'm not giving up." She pushed him and unlocked the door and walked back into the club. The music blasting in her ears. She walked to the bar and asked for a drink. She chugged it and headed to the dance floor. She danced and could feel German looking at her from the bar. A guy made his way towards her and started dancing with her. She put her arms around his neck and started moving her hips with the music. She kept getting drinks until German told the bartenders to stop serving her.
She was already buzzed. The guy she was dancing with sat her down and went to the bar. German was staring at them. The guy walked away from the bar with a drink and walked towards Kassandra. "Here. Drink this, you'll feel better." The guy said, trying to force her to drink.
"Hey, what are you doing?" German asked him.
"Beat it, dude." German grabbed the guy by his shirt and pulled him away from Kassandra. There were two guys dressed in black standing behind him that took the guy from German.
"Make sure he never comes back inside again." German told them as they walked away from them with him.
"Hey, I was having fun. You have no right!" Kassandra tried slapping him.
"He was going to drug you, Kass. Come, I'm taking you home."
"No! I can take care of myself." She said turning around and slipping into his arms and passing out.
