The next morning, Kassandra woke up and found German missing. She quickly got up, took a shower and left the room in search of him. She left the room so fast that she didn't notice and bumped into Marcos. "Oh, Mr. Rios, I'm so sorry." She said as he held to her arms.
"No worries, Miss Mills. Where are you off to in such a hurry so early this morning?"
"I'm looking for German. He wasn't in bed when I woke up."
"He left early to run some errands for me."
"Oh, okay, thank you." She said disappointed.
"By any chance, did German talk to you last night about what he and I talked about in the study?"
"No, I didn't ask either. It's not my business."
"Oh, but it is. Come to the study. There's something you need to know." They both climbed down the stairs and went into the study. He sat behind the desk and she sat on the chair in front of him. "First of all, my wife informed me last night about what happened to your mother, I am truly sorry."
"Thank you."
He opened a drawer and took out a large envelope. He got up and stood in front of her, leaning against the desk. "Miss Mills. I can tell my son hasn't been honest with you."
"What do you mean? Is there something wrong?"
"Oh, there is. This thing between you two is very wrong."
"You don't approve of me."
"No, that's not the problem. German is engaged to be married soon. See how having a relationship with you would be wrong?"
"Engaged? He has never said anything about being engaged." She said getting up from the chair.
"I'm sorry that you have to hear it from me, dear."
"Who is he marrying?"
"Anya, Carlo Mendoza's sister. This arrangement has been made since last year."
"Is that the deal Carlo mentioned?"
"I'm sure it is."
"No, it can't be. You said you talked about this last night?"
"Yes, that's what we were talking about."
"He didn't say anything. I can't believe it." She said remembering all they did last night. The 'I love yous'.
"Look, he told me he took you in to protect you from Carlo. Carlo and I made a deal that if German goes on with the marriage, Carlo will leave you alone. Here, I want you to have this." He handed her the envelope.
"What is it?" She looked inside the envelope and saw an obscene amount of money. "I can't take this!" She pushed the envelope back in his hands.
"You are going to take it. You are going to use it to disappear and never come back into town. I heard your brother left, I got in contact with him, he's going to meet you and the two of you are going far away. Do you understand?"
"I need to speak with German first."
"That's fine, but I'm letting you know, you're not going to like it when he gets here."
"Why?"
"Oh, I think they are here."
"They?"
"Come." Marcos pulled her out of the study towards the living room where they could hear voices. "Anya, darling, how are you?" He said walking to a blond girl hanging by German's arm.
German saw Kassandra and let go of Anya. Kassandra turned around and ran out of the room. German followed her. She tried leaving through the front door, but she was stopped by Mariano. "Miss, wait."
"Let me go, Mariano. I have nothing to do here!"
"Kass, please, let's talk." German said behind her.
She turned around and slapped him hard. "You asshole!"
German picked her up by her waist and placed her over his shoulder and went up the stairs to their room. There he dropped her in the bed. She scrambled out of it trying to leave but he stopped her. "Kass, please, listen to me."
"I have no reason to listen to you. Your father was pretty clear."
"What did he say?"
"He told me everything, how you're engaged to that woman downstairs and how you only brought me here to protect me. You don't love me, you lied to me!"
"I meant it, Kass. Everything I said last night, I meant it."
"You lied to me. I've been asking you what the deal you had with Carlo was. You could've told me a long time ago. I feel used!"
"Don't say that. I never used you. I just thought I could get away from this arrangement."
"You're an adult, German!"
"Kass, I'm doing this for you. Carlo is going to leave you alone, the war is over."
"What about me, German? What do I get? I don't get you."
"I'm so sorry, Kass. I love you so much." He said, trying to grab her face and kiss her. She pushed him away.
"Don't, I don't want to hear it. You had sex with me last night after you knew this was happening. You are a horrible person. I'm leaving, I'm going far away. I don't ever want to see you again. You broke my heart, German." She said as she walked to the closet and started packing.
"Kass, you don't have to leave."
"What do you mean? Of course I do. Your future wife is downstairs. You expect to keep me as your mistress?"
When he didn't answer, she scoffed and continued packing. "Where are you going to go?"
"I'm not telling you. Don't you dare look for me."
"Marco, who was that woman German put over his shoulder and took to his room?" Anya asked.
"No one, darling."
"Is that going to be a problem?"
"She will be leaving today. I took care of it."
"It doesn't seem like it, Marcos. I think I better call my brother."
"No, Anya. There's no need for it. I promise, she will be gone today and you will never have to deal with her."
"We had a deal. He marries me and gets rid of her and nothing will happen to her."
"And that's how it's going to be. Look, see for yourself." Marcos said as Kassandra came down the stairs with a suitcase followed by German with another suitcase. He handed it to Mariano.
"Mariano, take her wherever she wants to go. Good bye, Kass."
"Good bye, German." And she left.
