In the room, Kassandra paced. How dare he dismiss her like that? And in front of his wife and mother no less. She was back in what used to be their room. So many memories haunted her. There was a knock on the door and it opened without waiting for a response.
Anya walked in. "So, you're back."
"Not by choice."
"We were never introduced properly. My name is Anya, I am German's wife."
"Kassandra, I'm sure you know who I am."
"Oh, I do. What I want to know is why you are here. I thought Marcos made it clear to you to never come back."
"Well, you better ask your husband why I am here. He's the one that ordered me back."
"What hold do you have of him?"
"Nothing, you're the one that should have a hold on him. He married you after all."
"I was never allowed in this room. I always wondered why. I just found out that this used to be your room, the room you shared with him. Ours is better thought, bigger."
"I'm glad. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm a bit tired and would like to rest." Kassandra opened the door for her.
"Fine, but know one thing. You will be leaving soon, for good this time."
"I can't wait."
"Son, what is that woman doing here?" Renata asked, walking into the study where German sat behind the desk buried in paperwork.
"Mother, before father died he asked me to find her. He said I needed to find out the truth and to forgive him for hiding it for so long. It was his last wish."
"I know you've been looking for her since she left, don't be putting this on your father. The only reason you found her is because Marcos knew all this time where she was."
"Yes, a horrendous thing to do. You two saw me suffering trying to find her."
"You are a married man. There's no reason for you to be looking for another woman. Specially one that caused so much trouble in the family. You should be concentrating on making a family."
"It's not my fault Anya hasn't been able to get pregnant, I've been trying."
"I hope before I die I get to see some legitimate grandkids."
"Legitimate grandkids? What are you talking about? What other kind would you have? I'm not unfaithful to Anya."
"I'm not thinking straight. But you better keep it that way, God knows what that woman is capable of making you do."
"Mother, you know I love her, I don't love Anya, but I respect her because she is my wife."
The door flew open and Anya walked in. "Am I interrupting?" She asked as she closed the door behind her.
"No, dear, I was just leaving." Renata walked out leaving them alone.
"What do you want, Anya?"
"I just came from visiting with your friend."
"You need to leave her alone. She is no concern to you."
"You were fucking her while engaged to me, of course that is going to concern me."
"Anya, that was seven years ago, drop it!"
"Why is she here, German? You know I don't need the stress. We are trying to have a baby."
"I just need some answers from her. After that she'll go back where she came from. Okay?"
"You better be telling me the truth. I'm sure Carlo will love to find out she's back here in the house. You know what, why don't I invite him for dinner tonight?"
"Anya, stop. You're acting like a child."
"I'm acting like a wife. That woman shouldn't be here. He's hearing about this. Now, are you ready?"
"For what?"
"Today, the fertility test results?"
"Right, sure, give me a moment and I'll be right out." As she walked out he called Mariano to the office.
"Yes, sir." Mariano said.
"Keep an eye on Kass while I'm gone, please. Anya is causing trouble. I know she's going to let Carlo know she's here."
"Are you afraid he would go back on the deal?"
"I know he will."
"No problem, sir. I'll keep an eye on her."
"Don't let her out of the room while I'm gone. I don't need her bumping into my mother either."
"Yes, sir."
Kassandra had just fallen asleep when her phone started ringing. "Hello?" She answered without looking at who it was.
"Kassandra? Where are you? I went to your place today and your brother is there with Rogelio. He's saying he can't tell me where you are." A man's voice sounded on the other line.
"Damien?" She referred to her boyfriend of two years. They met last year of law school.
"Yes, who else? Now, where are you?"
"I had to leave town for a couple of days."
"For what?"
"Work related. It's about a case. Sorry, I forgot to call you and let you know, it was a last minute thing."
"How convenient, Kassandra. My parents came to town and you left. I'm getting tired of your excuses."
"Damien, I'm sorry."
"Tell me where you are."
"I... I can't. It's confidential."
"I'm going to find you." And he hung up.
"Great!" She said, slamming her phone down on the nightstand table. She got up, took a shower and got dressed. She opened the door and found Mariano standing there.
"What can I do for you, miss?"
"Let me pass."
"Sorry, I have orders to keep you in the room."
"So now I am a prisoner?"
"I'm sorry, miss. Is there something I can get you? You haven't eaten. I'll have them bring up lunch for you."
"I want to speak with German, the sooner I do, the sooner I can leave."
"I'm sorry, but he left for the afternoon. I can let him know as soon as he comes back."
"Alright. Guess I'll have that lunch then."
"Good afternoon, Mister and Mrs. Rios. Please, take a seat." The doctor told them as they entered the office.
"Please, just tell us doctor." Anya said impatiently.
"Okay then. Well Mister Rios, you are perfectly fine. The problem lies with you, Mrs. Rios. You are infertile, I'm sorry. There are other options we can try, there's surrogate or adoption."
Anya got up from the chair and left the office.
"Thank you, doctor. I'll talk to her." German said, shaking the doctor's hand.
"That's okay, I understand. This is a shock."
German ran and caught up with Anya. She stood against a wall sobbing. He pulled her into his arms and hugged her. "I'm sorry, Anya. I know how much you wanted to have a kid."
"It's just not fair. I can't even give you a family."
"You heard the doctor. There are other options. We can always adopt a kid."
"I wanted one that was yours and mine, not nobody else's!"
"Okay, let's go home. We'll talk about this some other time."
