“Where are we going today?” Sahasra asked

“Where are we going today?” Sahasra asked.

“To Manali. You see I’m a generous person — I know you’ve never seen snow, so I’m letting you see it today,” Nikhil replied.

“What do you think of yourself, huh? Keep your arrogance to yourself,” she scoffed.

“Whatever! Get in the car,” Nikhil said with a disgusted face.

Sahasra wore jeans and a loose tee, with a heavy jacket on since they were in Manali. When they reached the destination, she became excited to see snow for the first time in her life.

She loved everything there — the white colour of the snow, the clear sky, the blissful weather. She started playing in the snow while Nikhil stood on the side, and looked through his phone in disinterest.

A group of men saw that Sahasra was alone. One of the men said, “Looks like the girl is alone. We have a good opportunity, let’s go and try.”

The others agreed with him and walked towards Sahasra.

One of the men slowly approached her, after making sure no one was around her. Yes, Nikhil was there, but he was behind a tree, so he wasn’t visible to the man.

“Excuse me?” the man said.

“Yes?” Sahasra replied.

“I think I’ve seen you before, pretty lady...maybe on the television. Have you done an Ad or something?”

“No, and I don’t want to talk to you,” Sahasra said, slowly sensing the guy’s intentions. “LEAVE!”

Nikhil heard Sahasra shout. He was about to go to the scene, but then he thought, let me watch what this hippo-who-wants-to-be-in-the-army will do.

The man ignored her. “You came here alone? Women shouldn’t do that, it’s risky. Aaj ki duniya achhi nahi hai. You must take care of yourself. Do you want help?”

Tum jaise laundon ke wajah se hi aaj ki duniya achhi nahi hai, Sahasra thought to herself. She looked up at the man and said, “Don’t worry, I can take care of myself.”

“If you want you can join me and my friends over there,” the man pointed towards the group of men.

“Bhaiya, maine kaha na ki mujhe koi help nahi chahiye? So just leave,” Sahasra glared at him.

“Madamji, aapko bura laga kya? I’m sorry. I’m Sunil. Let’s be friends,” he said and extended his hand for a hand shake.

Sahasra ignored it and instead shouted, “LOOK BACK!!”

The man, Sunil, turned back in reflex, but didn’t see anything extraordinary. Before he could turn towards Sahasra again, she gave him a strong kick on his back. He fell on his face, but the snow cushioned the impact.
