The next day at school was weird. We had homeroom, and Brett moved away from the seat next to me, joining those who I now knew as my ex-friends. The other classes were pretty similar, no one talking to me or going near me, just giving me dirty looks. But I didn't really care, all I could think about is how bad Sam must've been experiencing it, seeing as he was the one that had pushed Ameilia away and defended me. He had interfered and escalated the drama, not me.
The class I had just before lunch was humanities, and just to avoid getting stared down by everybody, I snuck in early and sat at the back. I had made myself quite at home in my double-desk, setting up my book and pencils in a easy way to move around, but I wasn't alone for long.
Some kid wearing a denim jacket and fishing cap, with hair cut a bit above his shoulders, jogged into the room, and his eyes shot directly at me. He started walking closer, "Colby! I heard what happened last night, are you ok?" I looked at him, puzzled, "Yeah, I'm alright. Who are you again?" He stopped walking and lent back a bit, squinting his eyes sarcastically, "I'm Nate! Sam's childhood friend? Surely he's said something about me? Anyway," he kept walking next to me, pushed all of my stuff off of one side of the desk, and scooted in, "we've got humanities together."
I was surprised that Nate was even talking to me, didn't Sam say that he and Nate had a fight?
That class was fun, and when I was chatting with Nate, it felt like all of those judgemental eyes looked away. The lesson flew by, and it was lunch time. We walked into the cafeteria, and I bobbed up and down, searching for Sam, until Nate started waving at someone and I knew I didn't have to look any further.
I ran through the crowd and up to Sam, "Are you ok? Has Josh been shitty to you? Do I need to kill someone?"
"Colby, calm down. Yeah, people have been looking at me a bit strangely, and my books were knocked out of my hands a couple times, but I'm ok." He looked at Nate who was slowly walking up behind us. Sam gave Nate a bitter-sweet smile, and said hello. It seemed like the two had patched things up.We walked through the cafeteria, and out to a wooden table that seemed like it came out of nowhere. I clearly hadn't paid any attention to much of the school yard except the oval. "This is Nate and I's favourite spot to sit."
"Yeah. Sam especially likes it 'cause he can watch you play football," Sam punched Nate weakly as the victim pointed over to the oval.*
It turns out I had a few other classes with Nate, and I felt a little bit bad for ignoring him for all of this time. He helped me get through a tough day, but he eventually had to leave, as I had detention. I messaged Sam, because he was supposed to come over to my house that night, and then I walked into the scuffed up room, ready for another hour of hell.
