The first day of summer. It felt like the last day of happiness.
I tended to wake up in the early hours of the morning. The time when the sun was halfway above the houses and the birds were chirping back and forth to each other. My bed felt warmer than usual. Then I remembered why. My boyfriend was sleeping in it, breaking the boundaries our parents set for us.
The queen size bed I had allowed us to have our own spaces. My parents put some pillows between us in fear of us getting to the position we were in at that moment. Said pillows were discarded at the end of the bed, some wrapped up in the mess of the sheets. I smiled, noticing the hold around my body getting tighter.
His hat was discarded on the nightstand behind his back. His red orange t-shirt was riding up, revealing his lower stomach, and his gray shorts rode up to the tops of his thighs. His bangs swept messily to the side, so part of his birthmark was revealed. He was peaceful, and I couldn't help but smile over it.
"What time did my mom say again?"
His low, grumbling voice almost startled me. I smiled, turning so we were facing each other. "Eleven."
"Then go back to sleep," Dipper groaned.
"You can. I'm getting up because once I wake up, I don't fall back asleep," I decided, trying to gently wiggle out of his grip.
"You fall asleep with me all the time," Dipper mumbled.
I smiled softly in defeat. I wrapped my arms around him. Dipper wasn't the type to lose an argument. We stayed like that for another hour. A little after seven. This time, Dipper's grip was loose enough to get out of. I locked myself in the closet to get dressed. Dipper groaned outside. Dipper finally got out of bed as I left the closet.
The twin sat on the edge of the bed for a moment. "How long were you in there?"
I shrugged, not really timing in my head how long. "Five minutes, maybe. What do you want to eat?"
"I'll make breakfast," Dipper assured me.
"This is our last day before you're being shipped off twelve hours away from me," I pointed out. "We're going somewhere. Get dressed."
Dipper decided on a small diner in town not far from my house. I smiled as he enjoyed his breakfast. It would be the last one until the end of the summer. Just the thought of him being twelve hours away from me made my stomach churn. We had so much to explore in California. We couldn't do that without each other.
"Who are you staying with, again?" I asked, taking a bite of apple cinnamon pancakes.
"My great uncle," Dipper admitted. "He lives in this town called Gravity Falls. Nothing about that town seems normal."
"I bet it's going to be amazing to take pictures of," I commented. "Take a lot of them for me, okay?"
"Wish you would be the one to take them," Dipper replied.
"Me too."
We got back to my house exactly at ten o'clock. An hour to mentally prepare ourselves. He packed up his sleepover items in a gym bag and placed it by the front door. Eventually, he had his arm around me as we sat on the couch. Dumb cartoons were on in the background. I bit my lip. Maybe now was a good time to tell him.
"Feeling okay?" Dipper asked. "Am I doing something wrong?"
"Not at all," I replied quickly. "To the second one." I took a deep breath. "I wanted to tell you something for a while. It's about a really big part of my life."
Rapid knocking made my courage and bravery hide in the shadows. I sighed in defeat. Of course, with my luck, Mabel had to show up. Dipper and I got up in unison. I brushed aside his bangs and kissed his birthmark; a sign of affection that was modified once we started dating. I was not smacking my boyfriend in the head anymore.
I ran to get the door. Mabel, in her bright pink sweater and purple skirt, made the morning even brighter. She hugged me tightly. I was one of her best friends before I started dating her brother. She kind of knew, but she didn't mind it. I tried to hold back tears as Dipper gathered up his stuff and the twins gave me a hug.
"Bye," Dipper said softly.
The door shut with them on the other side. I broke down in tears for no reason. I could write to him. Send him pictures. Email was always an option. Maybe text if he still had service. We could still talk to each other.
A journal. I should keep a journal.
