Persephone

He follows me wherever I go, that foul creature!
His name is Death, and death in all he is!
Two gold coins for eyes, a glitter in the dark
He plays for Cupid and his angels, an everlasting lark!
He strokes my cheek by my bedside while my tears fall a gentle stream
He covers my mouth to stifle my scream!
Oh, oh, Death, he is my Hades and I his pale Persephone!

So many mortal men vie for his affections, but he loves naught, but war
As Orpheus learned in the dark and Oedipus learned from Fate, he is gentle in the sun and cruel in the night
He has taken me like Eurydice!

With long shadow robes and the fall of an axe, I cry
"Why? Why?!"
Jewels and gemstones and golds galore!
Blood of rubies and sapphires litter the floor!
He calls out, "Time! Time!"
In my hands, a pomengrate, in his a knife
Oh, oh, Death, he is my Hades and I his pale Persephone!
