Around four weeks pass after the job with Suguru, and Shiu calls me with a new opportunity. It's a simple one person assignment, but there's one thing that's off about it. Shiu hasn't been given a name or identity for the target. All I know is that he's male and in sure to be in his apartment at the exact time I'm supposed to ambush him.
This might seem unusual, but it's actually rather common in my line of work. Only being given a vague description of a target means there's increased anonymity for the person who hires you. As a result, these jobs pay a lot higher, which means Shiu loves them. He's always eager for me to take on any blind job he might get and has somehow coerced me to take this one despite how much I hate them. I imagine Shiu himself has a vague idea of who's requested the job, but just isn't telling me (or isn't allowed to tell me). After all, his connections in the yakuza world stretch far beyond mine.
I can only dread to think of who might have hired me for this.
The night of the job comes and I take the elevator up to the apartment I'm supposed to pay a visit, it's in a rather affluent area of Tokyo. The lift doors finally open and I step out onto the top floor before finding the door. I do a quick scan of my surroundings before using a magnet to disrupt the electronic lock. I'm surprised they haven't invested in a more expensive security system considering how posh the building seems, but oh well, it works in my favour I guess.
I'm not surprised to be met with darkness as the door opens, it is around 1 am after all. I shut the door silently behind me and observe my surroundings... or what I can make out of them. Moonlight shines softly from the back end of the room as the wall is made up of large glass panes. This creates a soft, cascading light into the room, but doesn't reach very far meaning where I'm standing still remains in the pitch black darkness.
I spend at least ten more seconds listening intently, but the apartment is so quiet you'd think that no one was even here. I begin to take a few steps forwards, my back leaving the cold wood of the door as I do so, and my hand resting on my gun which is equipped with a silencer for jobs such as these.
Suddenly, I hear a small shuffle behind me and whip round, gun pointed in the direction of the noise. It's not like this does any good though, before I can even fire, the weapon is knocked swiftly out of my hand and I watch as it flies away into the darkness. I don't bother to go after it, instead I'm forced to engage in combat immediately with whoever has snuck up on me.
I feel them deliver a quick jab to my stomach and I slide my leg backwards in an attempt to support myself. I try to grab their arm, but they're too fast and it slips out of my grip. I pay for this mistake, in retribution earning a painful hit to the side of my chest which causes the air to leave my lungs brutally. The hits aren't just painful, they're sharp too. My attacker is using some kind of martial art rather than just regular punches.
Beginning to adjust to their speed and strength, I deliver a kick to the attacker's side, causing them to shift their position backwards slightly as a result. They attempt to throw another punch, but I grab their wrist successfully this time, twisting their arm in the process to lock their joint in place. I have to restrain their arm with both of my hands as they usurp me in raw strength easily.
I raise my leg up in an attempt to deliver a kick straight to their stomach, reeling my foot backwards before kicking forcefully in their direction. I hit them straight on and I hear the person grunt slightly from the force. From the noise I can now deduce that it's a man I'm fighting. Unfortunately, the kick isn't as effective as I had hoped, the surface my foot meets is harder than expected (practically rock solid), and before I can retract my leg, I feel a hand wrap around my ankle.
My eyes widen as I realise I've been caught completely off guard whilst I still attempt to restrain his other arm in my grip, but before I can let go and pull away, he's already managed to slam me into the ground as my back hits the hard, wooden floor beneath us. I let out a groan of pain as the air is completely knocked out of me, a feeling I absolutely hate.
