"I'm telling you my spirit feels uneasy," I announced for the third time since I picked him up as the sun continued to throw its heated rays against my beautifully melanated skin.

"With all the shit going on if you didn't feel uneasy it would be a miracle," He mumbled as I took a seat next to him on the steps.

"Has my spirit ever been wrong?" I asked him seriously and he frowned looking at me as I handed him the blunt I had made.

"We ain't talking about that right now," He replied while taking the blunt from me.

"You need to stop smoking," I told him as I removed my pistol from my waist to place it beside me.

"How you gon tell me that after rolling a perfect blunt?" He asked amusedly, making me smile.

"What was Taj saying earlier?" I questioned while trying my best to suppress the heavy feeling in my spirit.

"You remember the group of teenage boys we put in our apartment near the complex last week?" He asked and I replied with a nod. "He was saying a couple of them used to push drugs for the Vipers, one of those boys told him that the Vipers are involved in the sex trafficking that's going on in the community,"

I sighed since a huge part of me had been hoping that the missing girls were taken by someone from outside.

But then again it's always the people in the community who help destroy it.

"It's shit like this that makes me wish we didn't step away from the gang shit," He mumbled and I hummed in agreement while watching as a familiar black car drove past.

I began searching my brain in attempt to remember where I saw it before since—

"Go check on the food and Imma call Taj," Spain announced, gaining my attention and I offered a small okay as I began getting up with the hope that my grandma had finished cooking.

Screeching tires sounded and I turned to see the same black car passing once more. The minute its speed started to decrease I knew what was about to happen but shots rang out before my body had the chance to react.

I dropped to the floor as fast as my vessel would allow before concealing myself behind the old refrigerator that was present on the veranda. My heart proceeded to slam against my chest as my unprepared body went into a panic.

"Spain," I called out as I began feeling my waist for my gun but I quickly remembered that I had removed it, and the realisation left the adrenaline in my system to increase while my chest grew tight.

Screeching sounded once more letting me know that the car had begun leaving, and I slowly removed myself from behind my cover to find the lawn empty, which had worry overtaking me as I—

"Ice you're bleeding," A voice I recognized as Spain's announced, and I followed his gaze to find blood soaking my grey sweatpants.

The newly acquired knowledge left my feet to fail me and the lack of support sent me to the floor.

My eyes traced each letter displayed in the patient's file that was situated in my right hand as I continued to navigate my way to the reception area to retrieve another cup of coffee for my weary vessel.

It had been ten minutes since my last cup but the boost of energy practically left the second it had arrived.

"I thought you were going to be in the OR today," Renae's voice expressed, leaving me to peel my eyes away from the file to follow the sound.
