"My fear of abandonment is exceeded only by my terror of intimacy."

Wei Ying yawned as he poured milk over his cereal. He glanced over at Yuan, his younger brother who was sitting there with his eyes barely open. Wei Ying stuck his spoon deep into his cereal, stirring it around.
"Why are we up so early?" Wei Ying yawned.
Sunday was the only day that Cangse Sanren slept in. It was the one day out of the week that she wasn't at the hospital working a night shift or she wasn't making luncheons for the boys ready for school and out the door.
Cangse Sanren was a registered nurse at Lotus Medical Hospital. She had been working there before Jexun was born.
Tuesday and Thursday were Cangse's other days off. However, Sunday was the day that she most enjoyed because the boys were home with her.
Cangse worked for ten hour evening shifts on all other days. She often took a nap after dropping them off to school due to getting home after 1 AM most mornings. They couldn't afford more than one car, so Cangse had to drop them every day. However, Sunday was a day they slept in and spent the rest of the day relaxing together, watching a movie. Therefore, when she told her boys to get up and get their own breakfast before 9 am. on a Sunday, it was an unusual occurrence in the Sanren household.
Yuan shrugged as he slunk down to lay his head on the kitchen table. "I don't know. Mom has tried on four dresses in the last twenty minutes." He blinked before closing his dropping eyes. "I think we're all going somewhere."
About that time, their mother came rushing into the kitchen, turning on the coffee pot. "You both need to wear a nice suit today. You have less than an hour to get ready. Please look good. I need you to look good." She sighed as she buttoned her blouse. "Does this colour blouse look okay with this skirt? How about my shoes?"
Yuan didn't bother to open his eyes as he continued to allow an extra few minutes of sleep to take over. Wei Ying glanced up and down at his mother. She looked perfect and beautiful as always.
"You look great." Wei Ying said, meaning that his mother always looked classy and beautiful. "What gives, Mom? Where are we going that you are so stressed about?" Wei Ying took a huge bite of cereal, realising he had little time to eat.
"Monastery hall. We're going to the monastery hall." Cangse tapped her fingernails impatiently on the counter.
"Okay, I know it hasn't been a place we've attended since your Grandma Sanren passed away. But I ran into an old friend, who invited me to the nearby church. There's a new monk taking over."
"An old friend?" Wei Ying grinned knowingly. His mother wouldn't be this nervous about some old friend who was female. It should be someone important.
Wei Ying knitted his brows.
Cangse held up her hand as a sly grin crossed her face. "Jen Ling. He's my high school friend."
She sat down at the counter as she spoke to Wei Ying in a whimsical voice. "We dated from 10th grade until we graduated. We only broke up because I wanted to go off to college, and he felt God was leading him into music ministry with his sister. His sister later married an evangelist. I wanted to go to nursing school. Our lives took different paths, so we broke up. I went to college and met your father. I haven't seen Ling in all these years."
