Heather came home from her morning walk and instead of being greeted with the silence she had adapted to, she was met by the arms of her little brother.

“Sissy! I missed you!” He screamed.
“Hey CC.” She replied, picking him up.
   “Guess what?” He said.
   “What?”
“Mommy got a new friend.” He smiled.
“Did you get to meet her?” She asked.
   “Uh-huh. But he’s a boy, not a girl.”
“Oh really?” She said, putting him down.

Corey nodded his head and ran into the kitchen. His older sister followed behind. Alyssa and who Heather could only assume was the friend of her mom’s stood in the kitchen.

“Heather, this is Matthew,” Alyssa said.
“Hello Heather, it’s great to meet you.” He said, sticking out his hand.

Heather shook his hand, but didn’t reply.

“Heather, be nice.” Her mother said.
“It’s great to meet you too.” Heather sighed.

Alyssa narrowed her eyes at Heather as she gestured Matthew into the living room. She watched them sit on the couch, snuggling up together. She rolled her eyes and walked off to her room. She sat on her bed and pulled up instagram, scrolling through without really paying attention. She found Miley’s account and decided to look through some of her posts before following her. She managed to scroll down to the end of last year where she saw a post with Leo and Jacklyn. She scrolled through the other photos on the post, none really stuck out but they seemed really close.

It felt odd to see them be so close with the way that Miley acted towards her. It was obvious that they had a falling out, but that didn’t make it seem any less weird. She messaged Miley, determined to finally find out what happened between them. As she waited for Miley to answer, she decided to be nice to Matthew for now, he didn’t exactly give her a reason to hate him just yet. She walked into the kitchen, peering into the living room where they were still snuggled up on the couch.

“Do either of you want a drink while I’m in the kitchen? You guys look pretty comfortable.” She asked, opening the fridge.
“I’ll take a water.” Matthew answered.
   “I’m good, sweetheart.” Alyssa replied.

She grabbed a water bottle out of the fridge and handed it to Matthew. He placed it on the coffee table in front of him and nodded his head at her.

   “Thanks.” He said.

She nodded her head at him and looked at her mom who smiled sweetly at her. Heather enjoyed being able to see her mom happy, she just had horrible taste in men. She walked back off to her room and picked up her phone. There still wasn’t an answer from Miley, so she continued her scroll through instagram. Hours later, she received a text back from Miley, Hii, sorry I was out with my moms. I don’t really want to say much but she used to be my best friend and then she said some pretty rude stuff to Leo when he came out so we stopped being her friend.

Jesus, she really does suck. Heather replied, turning off her phone. It was getting pretty late so she decided to get some sleep. She laid on her side, listening to the faint sounds of the movie still playing from the living room and fell asleep.

“Get up Heather.” She heard softly.
   “I'm awake.” She replied tiredly.
“Don’t forget, you have school today. I have to go into work early so Matt is gonna stay with Corey.” Alyssa said.
“So you're calling him Matt now?”
“Get ready for school.” She demanded, pointing at Heather’s closet.

Heather threw on an oversized light brown, striped sweater and a pair of black pants. She slid on her favorite shoes and walked out of the door, not saying goodbye to anyone. Once she made it to school, the principal called all seniors to the auditorium. Heather made her way to her friends, plus Oliver, and they walked to the auditorium.

“What do you think they’re gonna say?” Leo asked as they sat down.
“Probably something about all the smoking.” Miley replied.
   “Or the PDA.” Oliver said.

Heather watched the crowds of people take their seats. Once Jacklyn walked in, she expected to see her take a seat on the other end of the room but instead, she took a seat directly. in front of Heather. She pushed herself as far back as she could, looking over at Miley. Miley glanced at Jacklyn and rolled her eyes, mumbling something under her breath. Heather dug through her bag, searching for something to do while they waited for the teachers. As she was searching, she found Leo’s locket.

“Oh Leo, here’s your locket back.”

Leo took it from her, clipping it around his neck. Heather watched Miley return a forceful smile to Oliver, who kept smiling over at her. After what felt like forever, the teacher’s walked up onto the stage. They gave an incredibly long speech about the things they as seniors needed to work on. Like how they keep smoking outside, the excessive PDA, and the disrespect towards teachers. Towards the end of the speech, they talked about college day that would be coming up soon and how everyone needed to have a plan before then. They were then asked to get into pairs organized by the teachers and were asked to talk about their plans for after college.

Miley and Heather were paired together, and so were Leo and Oliver. Mia was paired with Jacklyn and stayed in front of Heather. Heather did her best to avoid the glances and comments made by Jacklyn, but Miley kept trying to engage with her, increasing the severity of the comments. Heather finally got her to leave it alone, but Miley continued to share a pissed glance with her every now and then. After Mia and Jacklyn finished their work, Mia wasted no time going back to where she had been sitting before. After everyone finished the activity, they were all excused home early, causing a loud, happy uproar from all of the seniors.
