They made it back to Miley’s place, with only a few troubles. Their house was very nice. It was two stories and had a wrap-around porch. There were some planter boxes around the pathway, with some wilted flowers laying on the sides. On the inside, the walls were painted in a light gray all around the bottom floor, and the wood looked freshly polished. The kitchen was a medium sized kitchen with a long island in the middle. There was a big table on the opposite side with 8 chairs and 2 stacked up and put to the side. There were two bathrooms, one placed on each end of the house, and a small office area connected to one of them. There was a long staircase in the middle of it all that stretched up to a nice entryway that led into the top floor. There were 4 bedrooms and another small office space. There didn’t seem to be anything else.
“This house is very pretty.” Heather said, staring awkwardly down the long hallway.
“Gavin complains cause he has to share a room with Theo, but I don’t think he has any room to complain considering how big their room is,” She said, pointing to the door on the far end of the hallway. “Let’s go to my room.” Miley said, skipping to her room.Heather smiled and followed her into her room. There wasn;t many big items, but there were lots of small decorations and wall decor everywhere. There was a large bookshelf and a queen size canopy bed with long, pink curtains in the front of it.
“That’s your bed?” Heather asked, her mouth falling to the floor.
“Yeah. I’m thankful for everything we have but sometimes it’s kind of a lot.” She replied, messing around with the curtain of her bed.
“Most kids who have everything you have take it for granted.”
“Well luckily I was raised right,” Miley said, sticking her head through the curtain. “Come on, get up here. We can gossip behind the curtain.”Heather smiled and sat on the side of the bed, feeling awkward about everything.
“Like, actually get up here.” Miley said, lightly tugging on the back of Heather’s sweater.
She pushed off her shoes, bringing her legs up onto the bed.
“Now was that so hard?” She joked.
“I feel weird being here.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know. All of the fancy stuff makes me feel like one wrong move and it’ll all come crashing down or something.”
“Well I’d say this house and everything in it is super stable, so you’ll be good.”
“Just because you say that doesn’t mean I believe it.”
“It’s probably better if you don’t believe anything I say honestly.” Miley said. They messed around with the small dinosaur toys Miley had underneath her bed. It fell into the late night before Leo ever got there. Miley’s bedroom door opened loudly, and the person who opened it knocked rhythmically against the wood.
“Hey Miles, Leo’s here.” An unfamiliar voice said.
“Okay. Tell him to come up here.”
“Alright.”
“Hey Jack?” Miley replied.
“Huh?”Miley pushed opening the curtains, wrapping her arms around Heather’s neck.
“This is Heather!” She said, lightly moving her arms.
“Nice to meet you.” Jack replied, waving his hand.
“Nice to meet you.” Heather replied quietly. He walked off, shutting the door behind him. Miley pulled the curtains shut again, landing back on her bed. Miley pulled up one of her knees, sliding the dinosaur down her leg.
“He went straight down. Did you see that?” Miley smiled.
“No I didn’t.” Heather replied, turning towards Miley. She scoffed jokingly, tossing the small toy at her. Leo walked in and moved the curtains apart.
“Leo! We could have been telling secrets, you can’t just pull the curtain’s apart like that.”
“Miley, I know everything about you. There’s nothing you could’ve said that I don’t know about.” He replied, sitting on the other side of the bed.
“But you don’t know everything about Heather.”
“Yeah that’s true, but I still know a decent amount about her. At least I think.”
“I don’t really think I have any secrets. I’ve told both of you almost everything.”
“Did you tell Miley about the Jada thing?” Leo asked, tilting his head.“No. I thought she was still upset with me, so I didn’t plan on telling her anything.” Heather replied, taking a shallow breath.
“Jada thing? Are you guys together now?”
“No. She told me she didn’t know if she likes girls or not. It’s really complicated and I didn’t plan on saying anything to either of you until I understood it.” She mumbled.
“You finally got her to talk to you?”
“Actually she gave me a note. I think I still have it.” Heather said, digging into her pocket. She pulled out the note and handed it to Miley.
“That’s a shocker.” Miley replied, handing her the note back.
“I was surprised too.”
“If you actually like her, I hope it ends well.” Leo said, making fingers guns toward Heather.
“Speaking of things ending well, did you talk to Vance?” Miley asked.
“I texted him. And I called.”“He never answered?” Heather questioned.
“He read my message. He never called me back.” He said.
“Text him again. Tell him to talk to you. Cause this is just dumb.”
“He might just want space.”
“Then he needs to tell you that. This is just ghosting, Leo.” Miley said.He picked up his phone, reluctantly typing. With a sigh, he turned off his phone and rolled his eyes.
“I think you guys are making a big deal out of nothing.” He said.
“I think you should listen to the professionals.”
“Professionals? Miley you’ve never dated anyone. And I don’t know about Heather’s previous relationships, but she’s in a somewhat similar situation to me right now.”
“I had two other girlfriends. And they were nothing like this.” Heather informed.“Okay? I might not have dated anyone but that doesn’t mean I don’t know how relationships work. My moms are a great example of how relationships are supposed to work. They communicate with each other.”
“Me and Vance communicate.”
“Doesn’t seem like you guys are communicating well.”Before Leo replied, his phone buzzed. The light in his eyes seemed to flicker away when he read the message, clearing his throat when he turned off his phone.
“What?” Miley asked.
“Did he break up with you?” Heather asked harshly.
“No. He didn’t break up with me.”
“Then what was that sad look in your eyes?” Miley questioned.Leo pulled up the message, showing it to Miley.
“I just need a break from you.” She mumbled, looking up at Leo with a mad look on her face. “With no explanation?”
He pulled his phone away, putting it underneath his leg.
“He doesn’t have to give me an explanation.”
“Uhm, I think he does.” She said.
“No. If he wants space he’s allowed to just not say anything. He has a reason.”
“But is his reason valid?”
“Well I don’t know what his reason is.”
“Exactly Leo. You’re supposed to be smart, yet you’re being really dumb right now.” She spat.
“No I’m not. Heather, am I being dumb?”“I wouldn’t say dumb,”
“Boom.” He interrupted.
“But you aren’t exactly being smart either.”
“What am I supposed to do then? He might break up with me if I push him to tell me.”
“If he’s gonna break up with you for trying to understand something, then maybe you need to be broken up anyway.”
“For someone who’s never been in a relationship, you sure have a lot to say about mine.”
“That’s because I don’t date Leo, you know that. But this stuff doesn’t just apply to relationships. It applies to friendships, even jobs. Both of which I have.”Heather picked at her nails, trying to think of a way to bud in while not lighting the fire.
“He has to reply before I can say anything else. He’ll only reply to one message if I send him a lot.”
“Okay then. But if you want it to work out you have to properly talk to him.”
“I will.” He said. The three stayed silent for a while, doing other things on their phone. It was 2:00 am before any of them fell asleep, and 2:00 pm before anyone left. Heather made it home and Matthew showed up shortly after with groceries bags along his arms. He put them on top of the counter and started putting up the groceries. She sat on the couch, watching him and Alyssa put everything away. He threw away the bags and started pulling things out to make dinner.
“Thank you.” Alyssa said, kissing his cheek.
“Friends? Really?” Heather mumbled, walking off to her room.
