It was Sunday, the last day of Thanksgiving break, and also Thanksgiving. Heather was helping her mom with the food while Corey and Matthew went to go get the dessert. Heather’s grandma and grandpa were coming down and Alyssa wanted everything to be perfect. Even though she doesn’t care much about Holiday’s, Heather’s grandma, Caroline, always makes her rather rude opinions about the food or decorations known. Alyssa put the turkey perfectly centered on the table, placing the appetizers evenly on each side. The boys walked in, placing the pie they got on the counter.
“What kind of pie did you guys get?” Heather asked, washing her hands.
“Pumpkin and blueberry.” Matthew answered.
“Sweet.” She replied.
“Heather, can you please put those in the fridge?”Heather did as she was told, checking the kitchen for anything else that needed to be done. She washed a few plates and cups that had piled up in the sink, putting them by the other dishes. After they organized everything, they waited patiently for Caroline. Her husband Henry walked in, and she followed. She inspected all of the dishes, food, and organization of everything before sitting on the couch without a word.
“What do you think mom?” Alyssa asked.
“It’s better than last year.” She heaved.Alyssa sucked her teeth, putting plates and cups in front of each chair. Heather went around, asking everyone what they wanted to drink and filling their cups. Everyone covered their plates, the smell of the warm food wafting through the air. They ate in quietness, only the occasional crass comment from Caroline. It was nearly 10 pm before Heather’s grandparents made their way back home. By the time everything was put up, everyone was exhausted. Heather put Corey to bed, letting Alyssa get the sleep she needed. Heather woke up early the next morning, unsure of how she was so well rested. She put on a skin tight, long sleeve shirt and a pair of leggings. She realized she still had 30 minutes until she needed to be at school, but she began walking early anyway. She made it through her first four classes without an issue, but chemistry was terrible.
“Today students,” The teacher started, pulling out a large stack of papers.
“We are going to be doing a review test with our partners. Everyone get with your partners and come grab a sheet of paper from both piles.”Everyone groaned, but did as they were told. Jada pulled up a chair to Heather’s desk. They did their work, with a few remarks from Jada. They made it to the second piece of paper where they had to list elements needed to make certain chemicals and other things. Heather turned the paper to Jada, accidentally brushing their hands against each other. Her stomach turned, the feeling of her skin made her body warm. She jerked her hand back, stuttering to ask her question. Jada crossed her arms, noticeably bothered by the sudden contact. It may not have been much, but it was enough to make both of them speechless.
