"Stelle, could you come downstairs for a moment?"I slide down the railing and land flat on my bottom. I give my Dad a small scare as he enters the house. "Stelle! Don't do that; you could get seriously injured! Or worse -" I kiss my Dad on the cheek. "You worry too much, Pops."
I walk into the kitchen, which is where my mum is. There's a heavenly aroma wafting in the air. Cinnamon, sugar, honey...it was all so yummy!
"Watcha baking, Mom?" I ask, peering over her shoulder. She's mixing a batter vigorously. It's a beautiful light brown color with a deep, rich smell. "I'm trying something new, sweetie. I'm just throwing some ingredients together...not quite sure of the outcome..."
"Isn't cooking for experimenting?"
"Sweetie, everything in the world was created by experimenting."
She continues to mix her batter. After a while, she stops and looks at me. "Darling, could you please get me some roses from the field near the shop?" She gets a map from the counter and opens it up. "This one, right...here!" She points to a green patch north-east of the shop. Less than a kilometer away from the shop. I think I can make it.
"Sure, Mom. I'll hop right to it!"
I hurry out of the kitchen and upstairs to my room. March is sitting on my bed, painting her nails. "March!" I yell because she's got headphones on. She looks up at me after a while and uncovers her one ear. "What?"
"I was calling your name! Anyway do you want to come with me to pick roses?"
March smiles. "Of course! Why wouldn't I?" She forgets about the nail polish and rummages in my cupboard for her hat. It's a big one with ribbons and sunflowers - a bright hat for someone with a bright personality!
We ride our bicycles out of the yard onto the pavement. There are no cars that drive on these streets because of the brick roads. The cars in Belebog weren't made to drive on bumpy bricks, which is why it's safe for us to ride our bicycles here. We laugh as the wind blows our hair behind us, the warm evening sun illuminating our faces. Finally, we arrive at the flower field. There's so many flowers growing... I can't seem to find the roses...
"March," I sigh heavily. "We've got ourselves a mission."
"A mission!" March repeats. She jumps up and down excitedly.
"We need to find these roses." I show her a photograph in my small pocket journal. The roses are a soft white and orange color, with a bit of pink towards the middle. They grow in thick bushes, but they're quite rare.
"Papa said that these roses should be growing here." I look around at all the flower beds and bushes. Nothing.
"Well, we'd better start looking," said March nervously. I could tell that she was not prepared to be here for more than 15 minutes.
We split up to make the task easier. March starts climbing a tree to look for the flowers. I don't remind her that flowers don't grow in trees but in bushes on the ground. I rummage through said bushes. "Ow!" I yelp as a thorn stabs me in my side. It's quite a big one, too. Using a gloved hand, I pull it out. There's a teensy bit of blood on it.
Eh, no big deal.
I walk further into the field. The flowers put my mind at ease. This field is so special to me - I spend most of my time here. I've laughed here, cried here, made wonderful memories here...
This field is my home.
Out of the corner of my eye, a small bush catches my attention. "There it is!"
I run towards the bush, only to find that it's a regular rose bush. I sigh heavily. Nevermind...
Just before I can make my way back home empty-handed, I notice a tulip growing in isolation. Its white in colour...absolutely gorgeous.
As I reach out to get it, someone's hand clasps over mine - thin, slender fingers, gorgeous pale skin.
"Dan Heng...?"
