It can be very difficult! Always keep the reference with you. If you think you forgot something, look at it again. I was trying to draw a self-portrait of me wearing a T-Shirt with glasses on it that says "geek" but I forgot how it looked like, so my dad showed me a photo he took of me wearing it so I can remember it. If you think you forgot something, just look at the reference. It doesn't mean you're a noob or a loser or something, even professional artists might need to keep a reference close to them.
