A HUNCH

'I''I''I''I''I''I'

THE TEAM MOVED TO THE BRIEFING ROOM TO VIEW THE CASE IN DETAIL. Charlotte sat down between JJ and Gideon, putting her case file and notebook on the round table. She started to fidget with her pen, waiting for Hotchner to begin speaking. It was her weird habit when she was bored and in school, it was a problem because sometimes she was bored out of her mind and she would start fidgeting with her pen or pencil and as a result, she would lose her focus and not hear the teacher. She tried so hard to break this habit, but she only was able to control it and not do it very often.

" Two weeks. Three shooting incidents. Six victims. All shot in the abdomen, " Hotch started to speak and pressed a button on the TV remote so everyone could see the photos. Charlotte has stopped fidgeting with her pen and focused on the case.  " First and only fatality, Henry Sachs, married, father of three, shot in a shopping centre parking lot, " the family photo of the first victim appeared on the screen together with the crime scene photo that showed a lot of blood on the ground. " Nine days later, Doug Miller and Kevin Parks were playing basketball at a community centre. Franklin Park. Four days later, Jerry Middleton, Karry Murray and Tim Reilly. The Des Plaines Police have found no link between any of the victims, " Charlotte's eyes were scanning the photos and her mind was working at rapid speed, trying to put a few pieces of the puzzle together, but nothing. The victims did not have a link between them and all three shootings happened in different places.

"Ballistics? " asked Derek.

" He's using frangible rounds which fragment on impact, making ballistics comparisons impossible. "

" The good news is that all the park victims are going to make it. The bad news is that none of them saw anything. However, one of the patients does have an intact bullet lodged in his spin, " said JJ, looking at her teammates.

" Well, what's the prognosis? "

" Well, there's disagreement among surgical staff as to whether they can remove the slug without paralysing the patient, " JJ answered Gideon's question.

" Well, without a useful witness or solid piece of forensic evidence... "

" The profile is all we'll have, " Hotch finished Derek's sentence. Gideon took off his glasses and Charlotte let out a loud sigh. Most of the time it was not easy to create a profile for a non-long-distance serial killer and catch that person, but now they had a sniper, a long-distance serial killer and had no luck catching this type of murderer with a profile yet.
