Will You Still Love Me When the Pizza Gets Cold?

Will you still love me when the pizza gets cold?

When we wake up and find

Last night's dinner sitting on the coffee table.

It's cold and stiff and dry,

 but we don't care.

We each grab a slice,  then pick up our mess.

Place the blankets in the cupboards,

Put the toys away.

You head back home, and I'm left all alone.

Will you still love me when the pizza's cold?

When it's time to shut off the game

That we played instead of studying

So you can get home before curfew.

It's cold and stiff and dry,

Yet you grab a slice on your way out.

You head back home, and I'm left all alone.

Will you still love me when the pizza's cold?

It's the first time I've seen you in months,

So we spent all night talking.

As the pizza turned cold and dry and stiff,

We made a face

But we didn't care.

But it's time for you to go home, and I'm left all alone.

Will you still love me when the pizza's cold?

It sits on the counter where we left it last night,

When we were so wrapped up in each other

That our appetites went ignored.

My clothes and my sheets all over the floor

The pizza remains untouched

As you sneak out the door.

Will you still love me when the pizza's cold?

When we part our ways after apologies are told.

I hope there will be more,

But I'm incredibly mistaken.

You head back home, and I'm left all alone.

Do you still love me, though the pizza is cold?

Much time has passed, and with it many changes.

We're tired and hungry, but all that we have

Is last week's pizza sitting in the fridge.

With no money and no food, we haven't a choice.

It's cold and dry and stiff,

But it's food in our bellies

And we have a home.

Will you still love me when the pizza's cold?

It's late, the kids are in bed.

We're tired and hungry, but all that is left

Are a few bits of pizza that we bought them for dinner.

It's cold and dry and stiff

But we don't care.

Because this is our home, and we're no longer alone.

Will you still love me when the pizza's cold?

When we're wrinkly and old?

The tables turn over and the kids care for us now.

They want us to eat healthy,

But we insist on pizza.

It's cold and stiff and dry

And I don't really care

But my teeth are so weak

And I've only a few.

The pizza is cold and I still love you.

But you had to go home

And I'm left all alone.
