I want to write a poem about heartbreak.
I could write about how you ripped my heart out.
It wasn't quick or gentle,
But instead, your bare hands slowly clawed at my chest.
And those same bare hands gripped my heart like a gem
As they retreated from the cavity
Just as slowly as they entered,
Watching every string fray to its breaking point.
I could write about how it felt,
Forced to sit idly by
And watch as those heartstrings stretched,
My body desperately clinging to her life source.
But you've heard all of that by now.
So instead I'll write about my mind.
Not the confusion that began this spiral,
Not the anger you know I have felt.
I want you to know what the songs never say
What the storylines don't dare to romanticize.
So I will tell you a story about a little girl.
A little girl who sometimes had a father
Sometimes had a mother
Sometimes had someone who truly cared.
A little girl who worried too much about
Food
Water
Lights
A bed.
A little girl who barely had a house
Which was always much too full
For her to feel so unloved,
To feel so unwanted.
A girl who was so used to keeping quiet,
So used to being what everyone wanted her to be,
That she didn't know who she was herself.
But that little girl found solace in you.
Because you didn't care that she was loud
And you didn't ask her to be anything more than herself
Even if she didn't know who that person was.
You were the first person to be proud of her
For being alive
And the only thing that kept her going.
You were the only one there,
The only one who cared.
And then suddenly, you weren't.
Suddenly, there were no arms to hold me when I cried.
Instead, there was emptiness and hurt.
There was nowhere for the tears to go
So instead they stained my pillow
And burned my face as they fell.
Suddenly, the one who carried me through my pain
Was the only cause of it.
There was nowhere for the world to go
After it filled me to the brim
And I couldn't take it anymore,
No one to take that load from my shoulders
So instead it ate up my insides
Until I dwindled to nothing.
Now as I lay awake at night and think of you
I don't feel lucky and complete.
I feel hollow and abandoned.
I wanted to write a poem about heartbreak
But I think this has turned into a poem about murder
Because you have stabbed the little girl inside of me
And left her alone to bleed.
