It was only a few minutes before the first trial. I had been briefed by Kentucky on how it was supposed to go. First day would contain 2 trials, then second would have the final three. First was an obstacle course around the islands, port, and back into the main center. Second was to be a strength test. Kentucky didn’t have time to explain the rest before the gate opened into the main center. I walked into the line that had formed. A few others joined in line behind me.
The arena reminded me of an F1 track. Large stands on both sides of a concrete road that led to the port. There were grid markers, 1 to 34. I was placed in 34, so I took my position at the back of the grid. The one of front of me took her place, other than the slight gap between her stockings and shorts and her long silver hair I couldn’t figure out anything else about her. About 20 grids up was Missouri, the one ahead of her being Preussen. Each contestant had a trainer walk over and chat with them. For me, it was Kentucky.
“You ready?” He asked as i started to stretch and loosen myself for the competition ahead. The sun bore down upon us, making sweat drip constantly. I hadn’t had time to think if I was ready or not, but as I thought about it I realised I definitely wasn’t.
“Yeah….I’m ready.”
“Good. Your backline competition with be easy minus the girl in front.”
“Who is she?”
“I forgot her name. She’s fast but tends to overdo it early on. Try and outlast her, it’s your only option currently.”
I nodded and jumped a bit, doing a bit of running in place. Kentucky sipped a water and handed me one.
“There’ll be a rest point at the end of the first stage, do not overlook it.” I shrugged, I wouldn’t need it. He frowned as I sipped the water.
“You’ll be dead by the time you’re done.”
“You don’t know me, the Iris will guide me.”
“Paranormal things again.” I could feel Preussen staring back at me as if I had insulted him. I grit my teeth and sipped more of my water. We were one in the same, both chosen by the Iris to fight what threatened this world. I knew he hated my guts. I knew he also hated the fact that Eugen moved on.
Not my fault I have cha-

Kentucky doubled over with laughter as I got a bucket dropped on my head by Wisconsin. She had a habit of showing up at the worst times.
“You just gonna stare at him for the duration of warm-up?”
“No…”
“Yeah yeah, I doubt that.” She walked off to the announcer’s booth before I could say anything more. Kentucky and the others moved off the track as a destroyer walked out with a flare gun. I moved to my forward stance, ready to run. This girl by me wouldn’t beat me, I’d make sure of it. The speakers crackled to life with the announcer’s voice.
“Guards ready! 3…”
Speed, all I need

“Go go go!” The gun was fired, all of us immedietly launching forwaard in near unison. I quickly took a lead over the white hair, passing up many others before settling in behind Baltimore. I heard a stampede of footsteps behind me, unsurprisingly as I had passed nearly 12 runners.
