I wake with sweet memories of Adam wrapped in my arms or his head laying on my chest. I am suddenly snapped out of my half slumber by the cold empty space next to me. I hear a noise out in the living room and sit up at the awareness that I’ve been sleeping while, I assume, both of my guests have been awake. As I get out of bed the sudden fear that Adam left already with no goodbye runs through me. Before I open the door that fear is gone when I hear talking.
I slowly open the door and quietly peek out. I smile at the sight in front of me. Kate is talking a mile a minute as she stands next to Adam in the kitchen. I take a deep breath and my mouth waters at the smell of breakfast. I watch as Adam looks from Kate, to the pan, to his phone sitting on the counter. I am about to announce my presence when Kate’s next question stops me.
“So are you and Uncle Warren going to get married now?”
It was a little delayed but Adam drops the spatula at her question. I am surprised he even knew what she said. I decide to save him and say good morning and walk into the kitchen like I heard nothing. Kate jumps down from the step stool and gives me a hug before returning to her spot next to Adam. He just smiles at me but I can see the small blush on his cheeks. I just wonder if that blush is due to last night or Kate’s young and innocent curiosity.
[Smells great.]
My compliment only adds to the color of his cheeks. Now that I’m in the kitchen I can see his phone displayed on the counter. Looking at the screen I realize he has some kind of app going that is typing up everything that is being said. Reading her marriage question at the top explains how he knew what she was asking. He catches me and I am quick to reassure him.
[Kids.] I smirk.
“Kate, help me set the table. It looks like you and Adam are almost done cooking.”
She nods and steps down. I look at the clock to see just what time it is and I am surprised how late it is.
“We are going to have to eat fast. You’re mom will be blowing up my phone if we are late.”
“Okay!”
Kate sits down and I help Adam bring the food over to the table. He’s out done himself. There’s bacon, eggs, pancakes, and even some cut up fruit. We all dig in and are quiet as we eat. Kate however is unable to stay silent for too long.“Is Adam going to go with us?” She asks me.
I look up from my plate. Adam looks up too and his eyebrows raise in confusion.
“I don’t..”
She taps on his arm and he looks at her.
“Do you wanna go with us?” She asks him.
“Where are you going?” He asks.
Hearing him speak still surprises me and makes me feel things. I look him over. His hair is unbrushed. He is relaxed and smiling as he spends time with my niece. Whereas last night he was affecting my pants this morning he is claiming my heart. I shake my head and turn my focus back to my plate. I am not paying attention to their conversation until I hear him agree.
“Really?” I don’t think before it comes out.
He doesn’t hear me and my comment is not repeated. We all finish and clean up. I send Kate to the guest room to get dressed and ready to leave. Adam moves to clean the dishes but I stop him.
[I’ll do that when I get back.]
[Are you sure? I don’t mind.]
I head to my room to get dressed when it hits me; I didn’t think to put his clothes in the wash last night. I walk into my bathroom and his clothes are hanging on the side of the bathtub, still slightly wet. I walk back out to my room. Adam is standing there and shrugs, like he already realized this.
[If we have time we can just stop at my place and I can change real fast.]
I am intrigued that he plans to join us today but I don’t want him to feel pressured into it by Kate.
[You don’t have to go if you don’t want to. Kate will understand.]
The corner of his mouth pulls up and he steps a little closer so he’s no longer in the bedroom doorway.
[I would be lying if I said I have something else to do. Plus, I want to go.]
My chest feels tighter. There is no denying this man is flirting with me.
[ok.]
He nods before walking out of my room. I try to wrap my brain around the huge change in him…with us. I pull my focus and get dressed.
It’s not long before we are all in the car and I’m pulling up to Adam’s place. He gets out and we wait.
“Uncle Warren?”
“Yes sweetheart?” I look at her in the rearview mirror.
“Can I come hang out with you and Adam again?”
The thought makes me smile. However, I’m not sure how to explain to her that Adam may not stick around. In her young mind she has seen us together twice now. He stayed the night.
“I hope so kiddo.” Is all I say.
It seems to be enough for her. She smiles and looks out the window. I picture a future where I settle down and get married. It’s hard not to picture Adam. I see him with Kate at Christmas and sitting with me as I watch another sister walk down the aisle. My mind even wonders what a child of my own would be like.
I am pulled from my thoughts when Adam comes outside. His hair is styled. He has on black slacks and a white button up. He is breathtaking. He smirks as he gets into the car, knowingly. I clear my throat and turn my focus to driving.
