Heartless

Sirius's gaze morphed from shock to fury. He let out a dry, humourless laugh at seeing Sidra and Regulus together.

"Him?" He laughed bitterly. "He's the one you're in love with? My prejudiced cunt of a brother?"

Sidra stood quickly, trying to explain herself. "Sirius..." No excuses formed in her mind as she took in the rage boiling beneath his gaze. He hated her, it was evident in how he was staring at her - like she was scum.

"I should have known it was all a lie." His voice was barely above a whisper, but still laced with venom. "I knew it from the day we met but you manipulated me into thinking otherwise! You're the exact same as every other person downstairs. You're a liar!"

"I never lied about anything! And I never manipulated you." Sidra sobbed.

"I thought you were different." His eyes began to water, tears streaking his cheeks. "I thought I could trust you. You... You hated prejudice. You were friends with me; a blood traitor. Sidra..."

She couldn't bear the devastation in his eyes. The utter betrayal that laced his features as he looked at her, more than angry, he looked shattered. "Sirius... I'm so sorry."

And she was sorry. She was sorry that she couldn't help him. She was sorry that he had to live with people he hated and who hated him. She was sorry that she couldn't be who he wanted. But most of all, she was sorry she had hurt him.

"No, you're not. You're not sorry. You don't have feelings. You only care about yourself. And I let you fool me into thinking otherwise." He shook his head in disbelief. "I told you everything! And you let me. You just went along with it, pretending to care."

"I do care, Sirius." She breathed out, only vaguely aware of Regulus behind her.

"Bullshit. I see everything for how it truly is now. You've chosen your side." He smiled, "All my friends told me you were bad news. I was too obsessed with you to pay any attention to them." His eyes flicked between her and Regulus. "You're exactly like my family. A heartless, prejudiced bitch."

"That's enough." Regulus slid between them. "Leave, Sirius."

"Believe me, I will." The door slammed as he left. Sidra watched the place where he had stood with tears running down her face.

Several days had passed since she had been at 12 Grimmauld Place. Sidra couldn't understand how looking back to when she had finally kissed Regulus Black could feel so bittersweet.

A tap at her window pulled her out of her thoughts. A black owl hovered there with an envelope between its beak. She hurriedly let it in, recognizing Regulus's owl. He had sent her three letters since she had last seen him.

Dear Sidra

I figured you'd want to hear this before it became public knowledge - Sirius has run away.

He left in the middle of the night and no one has a clue where he's gone. Our uncle Alphard is worried sick but my parents don't seem to care. They're under the impression he will return even though they won't accept him back into the family.

He's as good as dead to them now. Mother's already burned his name off our family tree and father's speaking of disowning him.

He was always too stubborn for his own good. I imagine he's staying with a blood-traitor friend of his.

I know you cared for him but I urge you not to try and find him. He's bad news and tracking him down will not help our cause.

I am counting the days until our next meeting for it will be an important one.

Sincerely,

Regulus Black

Sidra's tight grip crumpled the letter. With a hasty realization that she wanted to cherish all of Regulus's letters, she set it on her table and smoothed it out, despite the ire she felt at its contents.

The words he had written stung. Memories of her last encounter with Sirius haunted her. She hated that he believed everything he said - he believed she was a filthy liar who had never cared about him. Perhaps it was better that he had run away - she never wanted to see him again. He had been so cruel and it would be easier for her to forget him if he was gone entirely.

Sidra read over the end of Regulus's letter once more. She would see him soon because they were set to meet with Voldemort in the coming weeks.

She wrote back to Regulus saying it was unfortunate that Sirius was gone but probably for the best and that she was looking forward to seeing him again. She sealed the letter and sent it off, watching the charcoal owl until it became nothing but a speck in the distance.
