Second Chances

Sidra was packing suitcases once more. A shuffle behind her and the following sound of a pile of books collapsing startled her.

She was even more surprised to see Daisy, her house elf.

"What are you doing here?"

"Daisy has come to save you, Mistress." The elf held out a sheet of parchment. Sidra took it, bewildered and skimmed over the scruffy writing.

"I wrote this?" She questioned.

Daisy nodded and lifted a necklace from around her neck. Sidra gasped and felt for her necklace from Marina and found nothing.

Sidra grabbed it back, instantly feeling guilty at how she had treated the creature but it was the last thing she had of Marina. She felt very protective over it.

"How far back did you go?" Sidra questioned once the necklace was securely around her neck.

"A few hours, Mistress. It was all Daisy could manage."

"That's perfect Daisy, thank you." She felt very uneasy at the thought of the process that required time travel. She had died, presumably, which meant Regulus had died.

She needed to save him, the only problem was she had no idea where he went and he had taken the only other source of information with him - Kreacher.

Sidra glanced at Daisy. "Do you know where Regulus went?"

Daisy nodded. "Kreacher spoke a very tall tale. Daisy didn't believe Kreacher when Kreacher said—"

"Do you know the place or not, Daisy?" Sidra snapped.

"A cave, Mistress. Let Daisy take you." The house elf held out her hand and Sidra shook her head. "Whatever Kreacher told you was true. Please go and gather everything you think we might need to save Regulus."

Daisy nodded and vanished for a moment before returning with a tall glass. Sidra didn't question it and took hold of Daisy's hand. "Take me to him."

Sidra felt like her insides became her outsides and vice versa before the feeling ceased and she landed face-first on the ground. There was no time to worry about the dirt in her hair as she began to search for Regulus.

At least it wasn't the killing curse. Sidra would have died instantly if it was and she distinctly recalled being unable to breathe as though she were being strangled or something similar. She felt for her wand - she wouldn't mind killing anyone who had dared try and harm Regulus.

She followed Daisy along a rock pathway and followed the elf's instructions when it came to gaining access to the cave. She slit her palm and smeared her blood over the rock face.

She felt queasy as the harsh rock made contact with her raw skin but pressed on when the entrance became clear.

The place was big with a large body of water and very little light. It had a terrible feeling - worse than the tome Regulus was always so desperate to read through.

"Regulus." She called. "Regulus, where are you?"

Near the water's edge, something moved. Regulus shot his head in her direction and she ran to him. So glad to have found him alive. When she reached him, however, she saw his eyes were glazed in black and his face was wet with tears.

Kreacher was forcing a black liquid down his throat.

Sidra pulled out her wand. "What do you think you are doing?" She spat.

"Mistress, it is required to reach the Horcrux," Kreacher explained. "Master Regulus said not to stop under any circumstances."

She looked back at her beloved and into the cradle of poison. Near the bottom, she could see the faint outline of a locket. That must be the Horcrux.

She lowered her wand and nodded, taking a seat beside Regulus and grabbing onto his arm, coaxing him into drinking all of the liquid.

When they were almost at the bottom, Daisy offered up the tall glass, now filled with water and handed it to Sidra. After one last mouthful of the awful poison, she tilted the glass into Regulus's mouth.

His first sign of consciousness was grabbing tightly onto the glass and Sidra sighed in relief. She tore her eyes from him for the first time and looked around. She didn't like the way the water moved, as if something lurked below that was trying to be stealthy in its approach.

She looked towards the house elves. "Finish up and get us out of here."

In a flash, they were no longer in the cave and instead on a grassy patch of ground. Sidra looked around and smiled, recognising Hogsmeade. It felt good to be somewhere familiar, even if the place was tainted with awful memories.

She turned to Regulus who lay beside her, eyes closed but breathing steadily. His grip was tightly on a metal locket.

"You saved me." He breathed. His eyes opened slowly. "I got it. I got the Horcrux."

She took it from him, disliking the way it weighed down her hand. It was far heavier than any normal piece of jewellery ought to be. "Any idea how to get rid of it now that you've got it?"

"None." He smiled and sat up, coughing. "We can work on that together." He smiled and covered her hand with his, taking the locket back but never letting her go. "For now, we have to escape, right away. If we don't leave now the Dark Lord will track us down."

"I know. I have everything packed." Sidra patted her pocket.

Regulus turned to the House Elves. "I do not know how to ever repay this debt. You have both saved our lives and we are eternally grateful for that. But I have another favour to ask: do not tell anyone of this. Act as though our disappearance is a surprise and never breathe a word of existence again.

"Master." Kreacher nodded and Daisy bowed in submission. The House Elves began to walk off, their shabby clothes blowing in the wind.

"Wait..." Sidra called after them. The Finch family had never been very kind to Daisy. Sidra tore a piece of her dress and placed it into Daisy's small palm. "You're free now, Daisy. Go wherever you like. You do not belong to my family anymore. I owe you far more than freedom but it is the least you deserve."

Her eyes welled with tears, sparkling in gratitude as she held the cloth to her heart and apparated away.

Regulus knelt. "Kreacher, I trust you understand I can not free you."

"Kreacher knows this, Master Regulus. Kreacher will be honoured to serve the House of Black for the rest of Kreacher's days."

"I do not know if I shall ever return, but if I do it will be for you. Look out for Sirius, will you? And look after yourself, Kreacher."

"Master." The house elf nodded and apparated away as well.

Regulus turned to Sidra and grabbed her hands. "We'll be on the run now."

"I know."

"If you want to back out now's the time."

"Regulus, I have tied my life to yours." Sidra laughed. "There is no backing out, not even if I wanted to."

"Perfect, because I wouldn't have let you anyway." He squeezed her hand. "I arranged a house just for us. Away from everything, on a beach in Wales."

"Which beach?" Sidra asked, holding back tears of joy at the prospect of being with Regulus, just the two of them, forever, no worries, no horrible families. Just them two.

"Freshwater West."

"Then what are we waiting for?" She asked, jumping into his arms and pressing her lips to his.

Regulus smiled against her mouth and apparated them away to their new home, their second chance at life and their first chance at peace.
