2006
ROSIE WAS SITTING BESIDE NATHAN IN THE WOODS. They passed back and forth a blunt as they discussed what had happened earlier that day in school.
"I can't believe that old hag said that to you!" The were-witch exclaimed, letting out a loud laugh.
Nathan turned his head to look at her, his own laugh mixing with hers. He shook his head before taking another drag from the blunt he held between his fingers. Passing the blunt back to the brunette girl, he smirked. "Mrs McConnell just kept going on and on about me not doing my math homework. I was so stoned that I couldn't make out a word she was saying so I just gave her a thumbs up."
"You gave her a thumbs up?" She cackled, bending forward as she became weak with laughter.
The teenage boy and girl sat there laughing for a little while in contentment. As long as they stayed in the woods, nothing bad could happen to them.
After they calmed down, Nathan began to rummage around in his jean jacket pocket. Rosie furrowed her eyebrows as she wondered what her best friend was looking for. The boy pulled out a little bag containing small, colourful pills.
"What's that?" The brunette girl inquired before biting the inside of her cheek.
Nathan shook the plastic bag in her face. "Something that will make this day better."
However, Rosie wasn't sure that she wanted to take pills. The only thing she had ever done was smoking a few blunts and drinking. She had never taken it a step further. "I don't know..."
"Come on!" Nathan pressured, opening the bag and pouring a few of the pills into his palm. "Don't be a bore, Rosie!"
The were-witch fidgeted in her seat uncomfortably. "I'm serious, Nate. If Bill finds out, I'm dead."
"You said he's at work today. He won't ever find out." Nathan grabbed her hand and forced two pills into her hand. "Don't pussy out on me now."
Sighing defeatedly, she rolled her eyes before raising her hand and throwing the pills into her mouth. She swallowed quickly before lowering her hand.
The boy cheered loudly before copying her and downing the pills he was holding.
For a while, nothing happened. They both sat there and chatted nonchalantly as they waited for the effects to kick in.
Rosie squinted her eyes as she felt her surroundings begin to spin. She whipped her head around before grabbing onto Nathan's arm. "The trees are moving." She stated abruptly, her jaw dropping as she stared at the dancing tree behind her friend.
She heard him laugh but she was too distracted by what was happening to complain. All she could focus on was the tree that started to wave at her. As soon as she raised her hand to wave back, her phone rang out. Rosie twisted her head so she could locate her prized possession. Once she found it, she picked it up and looked at the caller. Caroline. Puzzled by why her sister was ringing her, she answered the call.
