Clarissa's POV
"Why are you addressing me so formally? Are you still mad at me?" He literally pouted at me like a baby, and for a moment, I forgot who was younger between us.
Hearing his question brought back memories of the melancholy from seven years ago, memories that I'm sure still haunt him.
Flashback
Mariya and I both watched as the figure approached, the heels of his shoes making a loud and eerie noise with each step, bringing him closer and closer. My heart raced as the silhouette neared, and I gripped Mariya tightly.
When that person stepped from the shadows into the light, we finally saw the figure's face. From his voice, we knew it was Xavier who had caught us red-handed, although Mariya seemed too shocked to fully comprehend.
They may be soulmates, but Xavier is a Beta, and he had just caught his very own mate illegally freeing a prisoner that their Alpha had ordered to be confined.
"Xavier...that...I was just..." For the first time, I saw fear flash in Mariya's eyes. She trembled, worried that he might be upset and hurt over the fact that his soulmate had broken his trust and betrayed her duties.
"What's wrong, honey? Why are you shaking? Your hands weren't trembling when you were trying to release her, so why now?" His eyes had turned black from anger and pain as he confronted her with questions.
"No, I was just...She's wrongly charged. It wasn't her; it was I who instigated her into doing everything. She never asked for any of it. Xavier, please help me set her free." She regained her stance quickly and begged him, willing to sacrifice herself.
"No! She is lying! Brother, she didn't do anything. She may have suggested it, but I acted of my own accord. I'm solely responsible for my current situation. Both of you should leave." I protested.
Xavier was already distressed by what had occurred in the pack grounds earlier, and I don't want to cause him more pain. These people, whom I have known for just a month, are more precious to me than anyone else, and I don't want to wreak havoc in their lives because of me.
His gaze shifted to me, and he released Mariya's shoulders. He walked up to me, his expression one of sorrow, and asked, "Don't you trust me, Doll?"
Seeing him in such a miserable state brought tears to my eyes. "Brother, I-"
"Don't you trust that I'll get you out of here?" His voice was quiet, filled with pain.
"I do, brother. I do. I trust you more than anyone else in the world." Tears smeared my face as I reached for his hand through the cell bars, but he kept his distance.
"Then why is my mate helping you?"
"Brother, please don't blame Mariya. She loves you deeply, so she-"
"-When it should be me freeing you." At the end of his sentence, a loud click echoed within the dungeon as a lock opened and the door creaked to the side.
Both Mariya and I stared at him, stupefied.
He grinned joyfully. "I'm your brother, so I should be the one to help you out first, but who knew my mate is so cunning."
