-Elena-

“Jer?…Jeremy?.....JEREMY!” I called while feverishly packing, throwing, and cramming things into my suitcase that seemed all too small for everything. My mind raced, an unneeded paranoia burned in my mind, every second that passed by raised my heart beat. Eventually a familiar silhouette entered my doorframe. I let out a sigh as I realized nothing was wrong, I must be going crazy. He pulled out a headphone and let his groggy eyes meet mine.

“What?” I walked up to embrace him; at first he was confused but then began to hug back. Eventually he noticed my suitcase, clothes hanging out and scattered all over the floor.

“Are you going somewhere?” he asked a worried tone to his voice. Man, even though I’m older he can seem to be my dad sometimes.

“Ya Jer, Stefan and I are getting out of town for a bit.”

“What about the wedding?” he said returning to his younger voice his face melting back to my little brother, a little puppy dog look too.

“I was going to be the best man.”

“Yes, and you still will be, we are just getting away for a bit to talk over the wedding plans and have a little time to relax, just the two of us.” I hated lying to him, but what else could I do? Tell him I was running away from a thousand year old original vampire trying to sacrifice me at an altar?

“Oh ok” he said with a sigh, as I finally finished packing everything I thought I would need. Then the light in his eyes returned and he gave me a funny look.

“What’s that for?” I asked, truly puzzled.

“Just don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.” Then we just stared at each other for a moment.

“Jer, that means nothing you have done it all, and I’m sure you wouldn’t stop to think about doing anything anyway…...”

Finally we couldn’t contain it and busted out laughing.

“Ugh, Jeremy, I’m gonna miss you when you when I’m gone.”

“But you won’t be gone for long right?”

“Right.”  I said it with confidence, but he still seemed a little skeptical.

“Well, I better get going; I wouldn’t want to be late.” With that I headed towards the cemetery, it was only 10:00, but I wanted a little time to prepare me for leaving- I never have before. I don’t know now if I even want to go. I had always thought of it I guess, leaving this rusty old town into the big bad world, but I guess Mystic Falls is as big and bad as ever.

I walk up the beaten grass, while misplaced leaves rustle beneath my feet. I spot my parents grave and leisurely walk to its headstone. As I wipe away the dirt and grime from the plaque reading their names I think of all the crazy stuff they have missed in just this short space of time. All of the vampires, werewolves, witches, and who knows what else there is out there. I wonder what they may have thought of it. If they would have accepted or rejected this new world of mine, who knows?

All of a sudden I hear something coming closer, not even trying to conceal the sounds of their footsteps. I hid behind a nearby tree, the best place considering the short amount of time I was given.

But who it was, was really the thing that surprised me.
