"Who dat be?"
My best friend nods at the vibrating cell phone in my hand. I ignore his sentence and type a quick reply to my boyfriend before I look up and roll my eyes.
"You know Chase, I might would answer you more often if you used correct grammar."
"My deepest apologies. Whoever are you texting on this short busride to your house, though we have only left school a mere five minutes ago?"
"Six minutes," I smirk. "And FYI, Oliver doesn't go to our school."
"You couldn't wait fifteen minutes to call him when you got home?"
"He texted me first." I shrug. "By the way, smile."
I click the instagram square on my phone and go to camera, snapping a quick picture of us.
"Why do you insist on taking selfies on a dirty, three hundred year old bus?"
"Memories," I reply, writing Sittin' with da bestie. to the caption.
"Oh yeah. I'm sure you're going to look back at that picture and remember what a marvelous day we had, so full of adventure in the best sort of ways," He says sarcastically, and I would smack him if it was anyone else, but I'm so used to his smart remarks, I just roll my eyes. "Anyway, doesn't your boyfriend get jealous?"
"Of me posting a picture with another guy?" I laugh. "Wow, who do you think he is?"
"Well, you spend a lot of time with me."
"He trusts me. Besides, he knows there's nothing going on between us. You're practically my brother." I shrug. "It isn't like I'm making out with you or anything." I pretend to gag at the thought.
He sticks out his tongue and replies, "You know I'm hot."
I don't say anything, because I can't say he's not attractive, but he's attractive in a way that you would think of your older cousin or twin brother. As in, he's cute in every single way, but being attracted to him would almost be a sin. And even though he jokes about his good looks all the time, I don't think he actually knows that girls basically worship him. It's almost funny, but I think it just adds to his charm.
"Dude, are you going to get out?"
I look up to see we've stopped at my house. I know he's getting off with me today, so I stand up and pull him to his feet, waving goodbye to the bus driver.
"Race you," He challenges, nodding toward my long, uphill driveway.
"You're on." I grin. "On 3?"
"No. Now."
We both start running, but even though he's been to my house a million times, I've had to run up the driveway even more than him, so I beat him by a mere five seconds and hold the door open for him.
"Thanks." He grins. "At least I didn't bet anything."
I shove his shoulder gently as my mom walks in. "I thought it sounded like a herd of teenagers," She says, smiling at us.
"Mother, we are not animals, nor are we a large group of people. We would be better described as, say, a pair or a twosome."
Both Chase and my mom stare at me for a few seconds, then my mother finally sighs and rubs her eyes. "What am I going to do with you? And don't say throw you away again."
"I have a suggestion," Chase says as I grin. "You could always sell her on Ebay. I'm sure you could make, I don't know, ten bucks?"
"More like ten million," I say, flipping my hair in a popular girl way.
