It was a late Tuesday afternoon when I found myself standing outside Prakash Sir's cabin. He called me in his cabin for some reason, and I was only freaking out, thinking what the reason might be. Naina constantly mouthed me "Calm down" but I was too nervous. All I could think was that he was finally going to keep his word, and fire me. Technically I shouldn't worry because I was anyway leaving Calcutta soon, but I knew how tedious the VISA process was, and it wasn't long that I applied for the fiancé visa. No reply came yet, and I only thought at the back of my mind that everything was going to be futile.
Tara, a new graphic designer went inside and I was getting irritated at the long time she was taking to get over with whatever she was busy with.
"How long is she gonna take?" I asked, looking at Naina.
"Relax, honey. Why don't you sit down?" she gestured at the couch right outside Prakash Sir's office.
I sighed, and just as I was going to take a seat on the couch, the door to Prakash Sir's cabin opened, and there came out Tara, wearing her nerdy glasses.
"I'm sorry, I took really long," Tara apologized.
"What was the hold up?" I asked, furrowing my eye-brows.
"I was submitting my documents to him," she looked taken aback at my harshness.
"Like I'd buy that," I chuckled, scanning her from top to bottom.
She opened her mouth to say something, but I shook my head and entered Prakash Sir's cabin. I caught Naina eyeing me, saying that I should apologize to Tara. I gave her an ashamed look, and nodded.
On entering the cabin, I closed the door, and turned on my heels.
"Hi, Sir," I smiled at him. "You wanted to see me?"
"Yes, I did, Lily. Please, have a seat," he gestured to the chair before him.
I obeyed his instruction, and sat on the chair. The heaviness in his voice made me shiver. I was certain of some bad news coming.
"How're you, Lily?"
I swallowed. "I'm good, Sir. Thank you," I put up a fake smile.
"That's great," he nodded, entwining his fingers. "So, you've been with Orient for more than a year. How would you sum up your journey?"
"Exciting, in one word," I chose to cut short on my words lest I blabber anything wrong.
"Alright," he nodded again. "It's been great to have you around with us. You played a major role in two of our biggest contracts over the year, and I must say you were amazing. I'm very impressed with your contributions to Orient," he smiled widely.
"Thank you very much, Sir. It has been my pleasure," I smiled too.
"That brings me to the reason of why I called you here," he cleared his throat. He fished an envelope from the drawer before him, and handed it to me. As I grabbed it, he resumed, "I'm glad to say, Lily that you've been promoted to the position of senior copywriter. We look forward to more beautiful years with you. Congratulations," his smile prevailed.
My mouth became agape, and eyes widened as I kept staring at him, shocked. Was I listening right? Did I hear promotion?
"That is a very interesting expression," Prakash Sir laughed, bending his head down.
I finally closed my mouth, and swallowed. I looked down on my hands, holding the envelope. I opened it, and fetched the letter from inside it. On unfolding it, I read the offer letter, and learnt that my salary has been increased from 23,000 to 27,000 rupees. A smile broke into my lips as I couldn't fathom that this was actually happening to me.
