Dido ...

The last time I visited a doctor, I'd sprained my ankle playing hide-and-go-seek with my father. A decade later and I got the same response Dr. Morgan was giving me now. We had been devastated then, but I was more so now that he wasn't here with me.

Three stitches later, I was in a stranger's debt. Alexis's, to be precise and as much as I'd like to believe in the goodness of others, his demeanour did nothing to convince me that he wouldn't exact anything in return. What could I give him? I couldn't even afford rent and in about three hours I'd be considered homeless.

I noticed that Alexis and his menacing friend, Dante were deep in conversation while the doctor gave me orders. To be honest, I wasn't listening I was too curious about the two athletic men sporting black suits. Suddenly, Alexis glanced at me his pale blue eyes holding a concealed knowledge.

I couldn't match his stare. There was an intensity about it that I couldn't contest and something else I couldn't place so I instinctively turned away focusing my attention back on the doctor who was still reviewing a file.

It became apparent to me that he to, was quite handsome. He turned directing his coffee brown eyes at me. Immediately, I glanced at my fingers and abruptly began to fidget with them.

By my reaction, anyone could probably guess that I didn't have much practice with the opposite sex. Well ... besides my father and my dancing partner, Logan Mackenzie but those don't count. My father was ... well ... my father and Logan was the guy I was paired with for the semester at the academy, so that was more of an obligation than a choice.

Besides, the surplus population at Sutton Dance Academy weren't exactly receptive to my kind. It was common knowledge that I was one of the few black girls who'd made it into the academy and though Logan was cool with it, the instructors and student body ... not so much. To them, I would always be the orphaned black girl.

"Remember stay off your feet and get some rest for the next few days." Dr. Morgan reiterated. "For any pain you may use this. It's Ibuprofen."

"No thanks, I don't do painkillers." I said as he helped me off the side of the bed.

"Just stay off your feet and the rest should take care of itself." He smiled down at me offering a wink. I had to consciously stop myself from rolling my eyes. What was with these men and their signals around me?

A hand possessively took a hold of mine and I turned to see that it was Alexis. I cast a confused look in his direction only to receive a not so pleasant glare.

"Talk to you later Morgan," Alexis called over his shoulder as he lead me out the automatic door.

"Sure Mega." The words registered faintly as we we're already out on the sidewalk.

"Thank you Alexis. I cannot thank you enough for saving my life earlier and for carrying me to a doctor. That's awfully sweet of you and Dante both." I said hoping that they we're not the kind to expect payment in return. After all, I could offer nothing.

I retracted my hand from his calloused one playing with the ends of my scarf.

"You're welcome," Alexis said eyeing me with renewed interest. He shove his hands in the pockets of his black slacks.

"Some day I will find you and pay you back but right now I have to go home. God bless you." I said spinning on my heal before heading in the opposite direction.

Suddenly, I felt a pair of hands around my waist. Oh dear God no.

"That day is today," Suddenly, his hand pressed against my mouth before I tried to fight as fear took hold of me. What was going on?

Alexis ...

Gee, I didn't know what came over me but I just couldn't let her walk away. She was the answer to my silent prayers. This sweet woman to whom I'd yet to be introduced.

Dante cast an incredulous glance my way. I must have looked like some crazy person in that moment and maybe I was. Maybe I had gone insane. Under this kind of pressure, there was no telling what another in my shoes would've done, and even so given my current dilemma, I thought I was taking things quite well. Dante was loyal and he had no choice, but to help me.

I'd explained the terms and conditions of my father's contract should I opted to take his place. That the probability of crossing paths with her just as I'd left the Hall was next to zero percent ... that it almost resembled fate.

I knew that she would make the perfect bride just by looking at her. She was gorgeous, smart and then there was something else about her that I couldn't place.

She fought tooth and nail against my grip, elbowing me in the side, doing all kinds of things in an attempt to escape me but soon enough she passed out. I couldn't help but feel guilt wash over me the moment her body went limp against mine.

Dante opened the door and helped me to place her in the back seat before we both got in. The engine roared to life and in a matter of seconds we were off. I glanced back in the rear-view mirror watching over her unconscious form. Guilt swelled in me like an active volcano, building in re-activity but it was too late to undo it now.
