"SO, YOU READY for this?" spencer asked as he stepped out of leah's car. they were parked in front of hazel's house now. "as ready as i'll ever be, i guess."

they walked up to the front door and rang the bell. it was answered a few moments later by hazel. "good evening, mr. campbell," leah said to the man. "this is my friend spencer from work, i hope you don't mind that he joined us.

"oh, um," hazel started, his breath hitched the moment he opened the door. he was back to his normal, nervous self now. "not at all, please come in."

hazel was dressed in nice slacks paired with a light blue polo shirt. the dinner table was set up with two plates, and now hazel was scrambling to set up another plate. "actually, that won't be necessary," leah stated. "we most likely won't take too long, so thanks for the offer for dinner but we'll both be okay."

"ah, okay," hazel hesitated, but answered nonetheless. he sat down on the couch and put a random show on. "and you're sure this is okay with you? is there anything personal we should try to avoid anywhere?" "no, my dear. you're free to look freely. just let me know if you want to take something before you do." leah nodded, mumbling a thank you as she looked around. it was a nice little house, with green painted walls lit up by warm white lights. it was a two story, as leah saw the stairs that led to another floor. the hallway the stairs led to were dark-the lights were off and she saw two different doors, and she assumed one led to a bedroom and another to a bathroom. leah started walking up the stairs, and spencer followed right behind her.

leah walked into one of the rooms at the top of the stairs, seeing it was a dark bedroom with maroon colored walls. the floor and bed were clean, but three different dressers in the room were covered with multiple little items. this was a bad thing. anything could be significant. there were also a few empty boxes in the room, waiting to be packed.

while spencer looked around in the closet, leah looked on top of the first dresser. there were piles of clothes on it, both women's and men's clothes, and nothing looked suspicious. she moved towards the second dresser, which had a lot cluttered on it. some papers, mostly bills, some jewelry, and even some makeup. nothing that stuck out.

the last dresser was barely a dresser at all. it was more a vanity mirror with some drawers. it wasn't very cluttered at all. there were a few pieces of jewelry that hung from the mirror, a closed cylindrical container and a silver jewelry box.

leah took the top off the cylinder and saw pictures of hazel and agnes in them. a ring was also in there, along with a dead leaf with a post it not stuck to it that read "a leaf from the first daisy he got me." nothing too special, just mementos.

and then, she pulled the box towards herself, and she sat down on the stool that stood in front of the mirror. it was filled with a bunch of silver necklaces that she'd never seen before. agnes typically wore golden earring and necklaces. she rummaged through them, taking them out one by one. they were nothing special.

she sighed, feeling a bit defeated. leah began to close the lid of the box, but as she did, caught a glimpse of glare from one of the four corners inside the box. low and behold, there seemed to be some kind of tiny, black string. pulling it up, it revealed a secret compartment under the floor of the box. in there layed a crumpled piece of paper. leah opened it up.

she read the words and recognized it almost immediately. it was the words to "annabel lee," a poem by edgar allen poe, in fact, leah's favorite poem. leah could tell that this paper was at least 10 years old by the condition it was in. there were x's written all over it, which was odd.

leah looked over to spencer, who was still looking in the closet. she waited until he turned to look at her. "did you find something?" he asked.

leah just sighed, looking down at the paper in her hands. "maybe?" she replied. "'it was many and many a year ago, in a kingdom by the sea...'" "'annabel lee?'" spencer walked over and took the paper from her hands. "what do these x's mean?" "no clue," leah responded. "i think i'll take it though."

and so, the two went downstairs, meeting hazel again. "hey, you two find anything?"

"um, maybe?" leah started. she took the paper out of her pocket and handed it to hazel. "if you don't mind, we'd like to take this..." hazel looked down at the paper. "...and we'll return it very soon, i promise."

"um, yeah," hazel stated. "go ahead. have a good night, leah."

the two left the house, and got into the car, driving home.
