Chapter 3: A MIDNIGHT WARNING

The night had settled in over Crestwood, and the moon cast a silvery glow through Alexandra's bedroom window. She and Selena were sprawled out on the floor, surrounded by a sea of textbooks, notes, and crumpled pieces of paper. Despite their best efforts to focus on schoolwork, their thoughts kept drifting back to the murder investigation that had consumed their lives.

Alexandra's bedroom exuded an inviting coziness that contrasted with the weight of the investigation they faced. Soft green hues dominated the room, from the sage-colored walls to the emerald drapes that framed the moonlit window. A plush little couch, upholstered in a rich forest green fabric, nestled in one corner, adorned with throw pillows in various shades of green and adorned with intricate leaf patterns.

The floor was carpeted in a soothing mossy green, muffling the sounds of their restless movements as they poured over textbooks. A small wooden bookshelf stood against one wall, filled with an assortment of novels, mystery novels prominently among them, and potted plants that brought life to the room.

The soft glow of fairy lights hung gracefully from the ceiling, casting a warm, enchanting ambiance. Papers and notes were strewn across the floor, and the desk by the window was cluttered with a mix of investigative notes and schoolwork. Alexandra's room was a sanctuary where she found solace in the embrace of her favorite color, even amidst the chaos of their thoughts and the mysteries of Crestwood.

Alexandra stared at her open textbook, her mind a whirlwind of questions and doubts. "Selena, do you ever feel like we're in over our heads with this murder investigation?"

Selena, her sketchbook now closed and forgotten, sighed deeply. "All the time, Alex. It's like we've stumbled into something much bigger and darker than we could have ever imagined. But we can't just back down now. Jessie deserves justice."

Alexandra nodded, her determination unwavering. "You're right, Selena. We can't stop until we find the truth. It's just... it's been so hard lately, especially with Xavier's confession."

Selena glanced at her friend, her brow furrowing in concern. "How are you feeling about that, Alex?"

Alexandra hesitated for a moment, choosing her words carefully. "I appreciate Xavier's honesty, and he's been incredibly supportive throughout this. But I just don't have romantic feelings for him, and that's been weighing on me. I don't want to hurt him."

Selena reached out to place a comforting hand on Alexandra's shoulder. "It's a difficult situation, but you did the right thing by being honest with him. It takes courage to address these emotions, especially when we have so much else on our minds."

A small smile tugged at the corners of Alexandra's lips. "Xavier's bravery in confessing his feelings has given me some perspective. We're all facing our fears head-on in this investigation."

Selena nodded, her eyes filled with empathy. "Alex, I understand it's a tough situation with Xavier. Remember what I told you about my own experience with David when he first asked me out? We were friends for a while before I realized I had deeper feelings for him. Sometimes, it takes time to figure out our emotions."

Alexandra nodded, appreciating Selena's wisdom. "Maybe I jumped to a conclusion too quickly. I should've been more open to the idea, especially since he's been so understanding."

Selena smiled warmly. "Don't be too hard on yourself, Alex. These things happen. Speaking of which, David and I are actually planning a vacation next month to give us some quality time together. It might be a good opportunity for you to reflect on your feelings and maybe have a heart-to-heart with Xavier if you're comfortable with it."

Alexandra considered Selena's advice, a sense of relief washing over her. "That sounds like a great idea, Selena. Maybe some time away from all this will help me gain clarity, and I can talk to Xavier about everything when we get back."

Selena squeezed Alexandra's shoulder reassuringly. "I'm here for you every step of the way, Alex, no matter what you decide. We'll get through this investigation and these emotions together."

Their conversation was interrupted by a sudden, jarring sound-a ring of the doorbell that echoed through the quiet house. Alexandra and Selena exchanged puzzled glances, their hearts racing as they realized how unusual it was for someone to visit this late at night.
"Who could that be?" Alexandra muttered, her voice barely above a whisper.

With caution, they made their way downstairs to the front door. The dimly lit hallway felt eerie, and their footsteps sounded like echoes in the silence of the night.

When they reached the door, Alexandra hesitated, her hand hovering over the doorknob. "Should we open it?"
Selena nodded, her curiosity getting the better of her. "Let's see who it is."

With a deep breath, Alexandra turned the knob and slowly swung the door open. To their surprise, there was no one standing there. Instead, a small package lay on the doormat, wrapped in plain brown paper, tied with a string.

Selena leaned down to pick up the package and examined it closely. "This is strange. Who would leave a package like this in the middle of the night?"

As Alexandra and Selena brought the package inside and carefully unwrapped it, they discovered a piece of paper inside. The message on the paper sent chills down their spines: "Stop looking into the murder of Jessie Berk!"

The room seemed to grow colder, and their hearts raced as they read the ominous words. Someone knew about their investigation, someone who wanted them to back off.

"What do we do, Alex?" Selena asked, her voice trembling slightly.

Alexandra's mind raced as she considered their options. "We can't let this scare us away, Selena. If anything, it means we're getting closer to the truth. We need to stay vigilant and continue our search."

Selena nodded in agreement, her resolve unwavering. "You're right, Alex. We can't be intimidated by threats. Jessie deserves justice, and we won't stop until we find it."

With a renewed sense of determination, they placed the ominous message aside and began brainstorming their next steps. The late-night warning had only strengthened their resolve to uncover the truth, no matter how dangerous the path ahead might be.

They discussed reaching out to the rest of their group, updating them about the mysterious package and the message it contained. The threat only served to fuel their determination, and they knew they needed to be even more careful in their investigation.

Hours passed as they strategized, their voices hushed in the late-night stillness. The weight of their mission pressed upon them, but they were determined to see it through to the end.

As they continued to plan, Alexandra couldn't help but think about Xavier and the burden of her unrequited feelings. She knew she had to address it soon, but right now, the urgency of their investigation took precedence.

The clock on the wall ticked away the minutes, and it was well past midnight when they finally decided to call it a night. They gathered their notes and headed upstairs to Alexandra's bedroom, where they would try to get some rest. But sleep eluded them both. The message, the warning, lingered in their minds, and the gravity of their mission weighed heavily on their hearts. They lay in the darkness, their thoughts filled with the shadows of Jessie Berk's murder and the enigmatic message left at their doorstep.
