ONE BAD DAY AT SHELLS TOWN

⚓️

THE WAVES CRASHED AGAINST THE CLIFFED SHORE, the noise filling her head. To Keeli it almost sounded like the ocean was calling for her, beckoning her to come and meet it. The salty breeze caught her curls and made them dance around her head. If she closed her eyes right now, she could almost believe that she was flying. A familiar feeling washed over her as she looked out at the sea of the East Blue, at the horizon in the distance — a longing. She wanted to do nothing more than to sail the seas, explore the world, and just be free to go wherever she wanted, without needing to worry about anything.

But that wasn't her life anymore.

It never had been.

Even though she grew up on a pirate ship, she had never been truly free. Keeli crossed her arms, her hands closing around her upper arms and the fabric of her gloves that reached up to her armpits, covering up the past that haunted her, as the memories of her childhood resurfaced. Being forced to do the dirty work of the pirates after they had kidnapped her along with a couple of other kids, she had to learn to adapt so she could rise up in the ranks, becoming part of the crew.

Keeli had thought she would hate every second of her life on that ship. But instead, she had fallen in love with the sea, with the wind in her hair, with the life of a pirate.

A gust of wind tickled the skin around her golden septum, and with a last look at the vast blue ocean, Keeli turned away from the cliff and walked away, back toward town. She had some business to attend to on the market of Shells Town. For one, she needed a new bandana to tie back her hair. (She was thinking a yellow one would be nice, or a green one. Yes. She loved green. That matched her gloves.) And she was a bit short on money, so she had to do something about that, too.

The closer Keeli got to the market, the busier it got. She walked down the cobbled streets, soft on her feet, easily weaving her way through the crowd. She spotted a few Marines who were patrolling and sailors who were here to stock up on supplies. There were a few young girls who looked at jewelry made of shells and pearls, and as Keeli saw them, she had to smile — they had a happy childhood. Can't relate, she couldn't help but think.
