Chris's POV
"U- umm, can I talk to you in private for a second?" A boy was standing behind Demetrius. His eyes and nose were bright red and he was sniffling like he had been crying. The sight of him caught all of us by surprise. This was the same boy we had seen CJ hugging the other day. I've been itching to know who exactly he is. And more importantly, why he had been crying.
"Uhh yeah sure bro, what happened to you? Come take a walk with me..." Dee said, immediately standing up and ushering him toward the cafeteria's exit.
"He just... I don't he just–"
"Let's talk about it outside. I'll catch up with y'all later." Demetrius quickly waved back at us while guiding the unfamiliar boy. Honestly, the entire short interaction was almost triggering. It reminded me of the day he said those terrible things to me.
"I– I'm gonna go use the bathroom..." I quickly got up and walked away, trying my best to conceal the tears that began streaming down my face.
"Hey wait a minute!" Trey said, quickly following behind me. "What's wrong with you, why're you crying??" He looked at me with deep concern.
"I don't even know..." I sobbed into his arms. "It just hurts seeing him treat other people like that..."
"You can't let that shit keep getting to you. What happened was not your fault at all." Trey tried to reassure me.
"How do I know that for sure? What if it was? Maybe I just said the wrong thing and overstepped–"
"Chris stop it. You're not the problem, he is. You saw that boy back there. What do you think he did to deserve that? Probably nothing. He's just an asshole, straight up." Trey let out a deep sigh.
"I'm sorry for burdening you with this again... I just couldn't bear to see something so similar to what happened to me..." I sniffed.
"It's all good bro, for real. He's been on some real bullshit lately. If Dee wasn't there to stop me I would've fucked his ass up again." He looked into the distance with heavy disdain on his face.
"I– Trey... that's not a good idea and you know that... You don't need to be anywhere near him just as much as me. We should just let Dee and whoever that boy is handle their situation with him and we'll handle ours separately... I honestly just wanna put this whole mess behind me already..." I held my head down and shuffled my feet around.
"Mhm, you might be right about that. I can't be constantly stressing out over every little thing he does, it's not good for my mental."
"I have something else to tell you... promise you won't get mad okay?" I looked up at him pleadingly.
"What is it?" He looked back at me with one eyebrow cocked up.
"So um, I ran into him today... He tried to speak to me but I did my best to avoid him." I looked back down and braced myself for his next reaction.
"What did he say to you?" He asked unfazed, which slightly threw me off.
"Um, n- nothing much... We ended up bumping into each other so we were both kinda caught off guard. I don't think he recognized me at first but he did seem pretty laid back." I let out a short breath.
"Is that so? Well try to keep your distance anyway, you should already know how unpredictable he can be. And try to stay away from Ben too." I replied nonchalantly.
"Ben? Who's that?" I asked, confused.
"Huh? Oh, his boy– I mean his friend. You know, the boy you just saw crying? That's Ben." He shook his head in disapproval.
